How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.
How it works
No right on red in New York City unless a sign allows it, 55 mph where nothing is posted, a signal for the last 100 feet before a turn: this unofficial New York permit practice test asks 194 questions on Vehicle and Traffic Law rules, each linked to its section. Another 48 cover federal road signs. Sections opened 18 September 2026.

NY, NYS and DMV: one written test
New York does have a DMV, the State Department of Motor Vehicles, and it writes and scores the Class D and junior Class DJ permit test. It is a single 20-question exam. The DMV posts its own chapter quizzes beside the Driver's Manual. This page works from the statute book instead.
What section 502 puts on the test
Section 502(4) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law tells the DMV what the written test must cover: at least seven questions on alcohol and drugs, at least one on road rage and at least one on work zone safety. So the Alcohol and crashes topic holds 31 questions: the .02 floor for drivers under 21, the .08 and .18 lines, chemical test refusal and open containers.
The DMV wants 14 of 20 right, including at least 2 of the 4 sign questions. Exam mode, below the question, scores the 14 only. Its result has a line per topic, so check the sign lines yourself.
The school bus stop rule reaches private roads and school grounds, and a first conviction is fined $250 to $400 (section 1174).
Under 18? A junior license is not valid inside New York City, and the Permits, licenses and insurance topic cites sections 501 and 501-b region by region.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the permit test in NY?
Twenty. Chapter 1 of the DMV's Driver's Manual says you must correctly answer at least 14, including two of the four questions about road signs (checked 18 September 2026). A strong score can still fail on signs alone, so run the sign topics in the Topic menu too.
Are these the questions the New York DMV asks?
No. Nobody here has seen the DMV's question pool, so nothing on this page can mirror it. This bank was built from the Vehicle and Traffic Law on the New York State Senate's website, with the section number and a link under each explanation.
Can I take the New York permit test online?
If you are under 18, yes. The DMV's permit test page says applicants under 18 get the option to test online, and the DMV then takes three business days to review the result and your documents. The same page lists 20 languages for the Class D test. Checked 18 September 2026.
