How this list was compiled: Written from the South Carolina Code of Laws, Title 56 (Motor Vehicles): Chapter 1 (driver's license), Chapter 5 (Uniform Act Regulating Traffic on Highways) and Chapter 10 (motor vehicle registration and financial security), as published by the South Carolina Legislature at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/title56.php, chapter pages fetched 2026-09-18. Each question names its section; the code pages have no per-section anchors, so each sourceUrl is the chapter page. The Legislature's code page, https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/statmast.php (checked 2026-09-18), states that the online code is current through the 2025 Session of the General Assembly and is not the official version, so acts of the 2026 session are not reflected. Section 56-5-3890 and the distracted driving line of section 56-1-720 are cited as enacted by 2025 Act No. 40 (South Carolina Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act, effective September 1, 2025), section 56-1-50 as amended by 2024 Act No. 146 and section 56-5-1538 as amended by 2024 Act No. 174. Exam format facts on the page (vision and knowledge tests for a beginner's permit, $2 knowledge test, $2.50 permit, testing at any SCDMV branch before 4 p.m., minimum age 15, the 180-day and 30-day holding periods) come from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, https://dmv.sc.gov/driver-services/drivers-license/beginner-permits and https://dmv.sc.gov/driver-services/drivers-license/testing, and the rule against manuals and devices in the test area from the South Carolina Driver's Manual, https://dmv.sc.gov/sites/scdmv/files/2026-04/Driver's%20Manual.pdf, all checked 2026-09-18. Those pages and the manual do not print a question count or pass mark, so none is given. Licence: Own work. How it works

Title 56 of the South Carolina Code of Laws is the source for this unofficial South Carolina permit practice test: 304 questions, each naming its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. Each link opens the chapter on the Legislature's site. Search it for the section number. SCDMV did not write it. Statute text read 18 September 2026, as published through the 2025 session.

Read the full guide

Who gives the test, and when

South Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles gives the beginner's permit knowledge test. SCDMV says it covers road signs, traffic laws and the rules of safe driving, and any branch gives it to applicants who arrive before 4 p.m.

Rules the South Carolina Code sets its own way

Section 56-5-3890, the Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act in force since 1 September 2025, bars holding a phone while driving: $100 the first time, then $200 and two points. Section 56-5-1885 keeps the far left lane of a controlled-access highway for passing, fine capped at $25. A driver meeting a stopped school bus from the opposite direction may keep going only on a multi-lane highway: four or more lanes, at least two each way.

  • Learn section 56-5-1520 as a ladder: 30 mph in an urban district, 40 on unpaved roads, 55 on other paved highways, 70 on a posted interstate.
  • Under section 56-1-50, permit driving between 6 a.m. and midnight takes a licensed driver of 21 or older, with a year of experience, beside you.
  • The move-over law, section 56-5-1538, protects authorized tow and recovery vehicles as well as police, fire and ambulances. The fine runs $300 to $500.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the South Carolina knowledge test?

SCDMV prints no number. Its beginner's permit page, its testing page and the Driver's Manual on dmv.sc.gov, all read 18 September 2026, give no question count or pass mark. Exam mode, below the question, asks 25, this site's round length, with no pass verdict. The fees are there: $2 for the knowledge test, $2.50 for the permit.

Is there a South Carolina permit test answers PDF?

Not of the state's exam, which this page does not hold. After a round, Print lists the questions you played, to trim or add to, with a tick for the answer key, and most browsers can save that as a PDF. The Driver's Manual bars manuals, testing aids and electronic devices from the test area. The free manual and the state's practice exam are on dmv.sc.gov.

Who can get a South Carolina beginner's permit?

SCDMV sets the minimum age at 15 and gives a vision test with the knowledge test. Anyone under 18 brings a qualified adult to consent. Under 18, the permit is held 180 days before the next license. At 18 or older, at least 30 days.
