How it works
Rhode Island's computerized knowledge exam asks 40 multiple choice questions inside a 90-minute maximum, by the DMV's Driver's Manual. This unofficial Rhode Island permit practice test draws 235 free questions from Title 31 of the General Laws, each linked to its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. Statutes and manual read 18 September 2026.

Who sits the knowledge exam, and where
Applicants 18 and older test at the DMV headquarters in Cranston, by reservation only. Anyone under 18 first completes the 33-hour classroom course of section 31-10-19, and students taught through CCRI may test at the college. The DMV's pages print no pass mark, so Exam mode, below the question, reports a score and no verdict.
Rules Title 31 writes its own way
Rhode Island permit test practice pays off most on rules a national quiz skips. Speed limits are prima facie: 25 mph in business and residence districts, 50 by day and 45 after dark elsewhere (31-14-2). Lamps go on whenever the wipers run (31-24-1). A flashing green signal means proceed with caution (31-13-9). In a business or residential district, section 31-15-12 asks you to leave room ahead for an overtaking vehicle.
Treat section 31-10-6 as a timeline: permit at 16, then six months and 50 supervised hours with 10 at night before the provisional license, then 12 clean months before a full license at 17.
Under 18, section 31-22-11.9 rules out every phone behind the wheel, hands-free included, unless it is an emergency. Adults may go hands-free under section 31-22-30.
Run Exam mode once early, note the two lowest-scoring topics, and pick each in the Topic menu before timing yourself again.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the permit test in RI?
Forty. The Rhode Island Driver's Manual, April 2024 edition, the one posted 19 September 2026, describes a computerized exam of 40 multiple choice questions with a 90-minute maximum. Neither it nor the DMV's knowledge exam page gives a pass mark. The exam page adds that anyone who fails waits at least 8 days to retake it.
Do I need driver education before a Rhode Island permit?
Under 18, yes. Section 31-10-6 puts a driver training course and a written examination ahead of the limited instruction permit. From 18, section 31-10-7 provides a temporary permit instead, held at least 30 days before the road test.
Why does every question cite a section of the General Laws?
The statute is the one source any reader can check. Each question was written from Title 31 as published on the General Assembly's website on 18 September 2026, and its link opens that section. Nothing was taken from the Driver's Manual or the DMV's exam, which this site has never seen.
