How it works

Vermont gives its learner's permit knowledge test online: 20 questions, four choices each, and 16 right to pass. This unofficial Vermont permit practice test goes wider. Its 278 questions each cite a section of Title 23 of the Vermont Statutes and link to the General Assembly's own page for it. Another 48 cover the road signs used nationwide.

Twenty questions online, and a day's wait after a miss

The Vermont Driver's Manual says anyone who fails waits at least one day before the next try. The DMV's fee chart lists the knowledge test at $39 and the two-year permit at $24. Exam mode, below the question, runs the same 20. Press Start the exam, and the result sets your score against 16 with a line per topic.

Where Vermont's road law goes its own way

A Vermont practice permit test should sound like Vermont. The basic speed statute, 23 V.S.A. § 1081, makes 50 mph the ceiling wherever no speed zone or local limit says otherwise. Ten points inside two years starts a suspension under § 2505, and a junior operator's license is recalled for 90 days at six. Holding a phone at a red light still breaks § 1095b.

  • With only 20 questions, the fifth wrong choice fails the DMV's exam. Section 1033 defines due care around a bicyclist or other vulnerable user as slowing down and leaving at least four feet.
  • Learn the point table in § 2502 in steps: following too closely is three points, failing to yield to a pedestrian four, passing a stopped school bus five.
  • Under 18? Section 1095a bans any portable electronic device and carries no hands-free exception, and one texting ticket recalls a permit or junior license for 30 days under § 607a.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Vermont permit test, and how many can you miss?

Twenty, and you can miss 4: at least 16 must be correct, says the Vermont Driver's Manual, form VN-007, read on the DMV's site on 19 September 2026.

How old do you have to be to get a learner's permit in Vermont?

Fifteen. 23 V.S.A. § 617 opens the permit to residents 15 and over, and the DMV asks a parent or guardian to sign for anyone under 18. A junior operator's license at 16 needs a full year on the permit plus 40 certified practice hours, 10 of them at night.

Are these the questions the Vermont DMV uses?

They are not, and no outside site holds that pool. Every item here was written from a section of Title 23, or from 7 V.S.A. § 656 for the under-21 alcohol limit, and nothing was lifted from the Driver's Manual. Miss one and its citation opens that section on legislature.vermont.gov.
