How this list was compiled: Written from the Vermont Statutes Annotated, Title 23 (Motor Vehicles), sections 601, 617, 615, 733, 1256, 1257, 1243, 1307, 1117, 1114, 1116, 1115, 4, each read on the Vermont General Assembly's site, https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/title/23, on 2026-09-30. Each question names its section and links to it. That a knowledge examination comes before the permit is 23 V.S.A. § 617(b)(2): the motorcycle learner's permit is issued after the applicant has passed all parts of the applicable motorcycle endorsement examination other than a skill test. Exam facts on the page come from the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles page https://dmv.vermont.gov/licenses/types-of-licenses-ids/motorcycle-endorsement, read with a browser on 2026-09-30: a 25-question, multiple-choice knowledge exam, passed at 80% or better, based on the material in the motorcycle manual, with a wait of at least one day after a failed exam and a skills exam after it. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Vermont motorcycle manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial Vermont motorcycle permit test practice has 53 questions from Title 23 of the Vermont Statutes, with the section under each. It covers the law only; the DMV's exam draws on the motorcycle manual, so study that too.

The 120-day permit and its two renewals

Any licensed person may apply for a motorcycle learner's permit, for three-wheeled motorcycles only or for any motorcycle. It lasts 120 days and may be renewed only twice; after that comes a 12-month wait unless a rider training course is completed (23 V.S.A. § 617). Headgear is required for every operator and passenger (§ 1256).

What the DMV publishes about the test

The DMV's motorcycle endorsement page, read September 2026, describes a 25-question multiple-choice knowledge exam passed at 80% or better, with a wait of at least one day after a fail and a skills exam afterward. Exam mode here copies both figures: press it under the question, then Start the exam.

  • Handlebars may rise no more than 15 inches above the operator's part of the seat, and a passenger outside a sidecar needs footrests (§ 1117).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Vermont motorcycle permit test, and how many can you miss?

Twenty-five, multiple choice, and you can miss 5: 80% or better passes, says the DMV's motorcycle endorsement page, read September 2026. Both figures in Exam mode are the DMV's.

Can you carry a passenger with a motorcycle permit in Vermont?

No. A licensed person without a motorcycle endorsement may ride with no passengers, only during daylight hours, and only with a valid motorcycle learner's permit on his or her person (23 V.S.A. § 615).

Is this the Vermont DMV's own motorcycle exam?

No. Nobody at the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles wrote, reviewed or approved these questions, and this is not a government website. Every answer rests on a section of Title 23 of the Vermont Statutes Annotated.
