The endorsement, the helmet and the seat
18 DCMR 107.13 endorses a license or provisional permit at 18, after the written motorcycle knowledge test and a demonstration course finished within 6 months. 2215.3 puts an approved helmet on everyone who operates or rides, and 2215.4 adds goggles or a face shield for the operator. A passenger needs a seat with foot rests and handgrips, or a side car (2215.2).
What the District publishes about the test
The Department of Motor Vehicles' motorcycle endorsement page, read in October 2026, asks for a passed knowledge test and a demonstration course completed within the last 6 months. It gives no question count and no pass mark, so none is shown here.
- Two speeds sort the small machines in 18 DCMR 9901: 20 miles per hour for a motorized bicycle's motor, 30 for a motor-driven cycle's.
Questions and answers
Do you need a motorcycle license in DC?
Yes, as an endorsement on a District driver license or provisional permit. 18 DCMR 104.13 approves a resident to operate motorcycles only after the written motorcycle knowledge test and a demonstration course; 107.13 sets the age at 18 or older.
Is there a motorcycle helmet law in DC?
Yes. 18 DCMR 2215.3 says no person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle unless wearing a protective helmet of an approved type. The operator also wears goggles or a face shield under 2215.4, with two exceptions in 2215.5.
Does a motor-driven cycle need a motorcycle endorsement in DC?
18 DCMR 9901 says a motor-driven cycle is a motorcycle when operated above 30 miles per hour, and its operator must then have a valid motorcycle endorsement in possession. The definition caps its motor at 50 cubic centimeters.
Is this the Washington DC DMV motorcycle knowledge test?
No. The department's questions have never been seen here. This page is not a government website and is not affiliated with the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles; its questions were written from the adopted rules published on dcregs.dc.gov.
