Class M, helmets and seats in Maryland law

Classes A, B and C leave out every motorcycle but an autocycle, so a two-wheeler needs Class M (16-104.1). A permit holder's only lawful passenger is someone who could supervise: 21 or older, licensed three years. Every rider and passenger wears approved headgear (21-1306), and handlebars stay within 20 inches of the seat (21-1305).

The course and the test

Section 16-110 puts vision, signs and traffic law on the examination. Finishing the MVA-approved basic motorcycle safety course counts as passing the skills and knowledge tests (16-603). This bank gives no question count or pass mark, so it has no exam mode: use the Start from menu and Missed.

  • Section 16-105(e): a licensed driver adding Class M waits 14 days after the permit before the examination.

Questions and answers

Can I carry a passenger on a Maryland motorcycle learner's permit?

Only a person who meets the supervisor rules in section 16-105(b): at least 21 and licensed for at least 3 years for motorcycles. Nobody else may ride with you until you hold Class M.

Does Maryland require a motorcycle helmet for adults?

Yes. Section 21-1306 bars anyone from operating or riding on a motorcycle without approved headgear, at any age. The operator also needs approved eye protection unless the motorcycle has a windscreen.

Is this the official MD MVA motorcycle practice test?

No. This is not a government website and is not affiliated with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. It has never seen the real questions. Every answer here rests on a section of Maryland law.
