How this list was compiled: Written from the Michigan Vehicle Code (MCL chapter 257) and MCL 500.3103 of the Insurance Code, as published by the Michigan Legislature at https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-257-658 and its sister pages, checked 2026-09-19, when the site was marked complete through PA 91 of 2026. Each question names its section and links to it. Exam facts on the page come from the Michigan Secretary of State, https://www.michigan.gov/sos/license-id/motorcycle-riders and https://www.michigan.gov/sos/all-services/motorcycle-endorsement, both checked 2026-09-19. They give no question count, pass mark or time limit for the motorcycle written knowledge test, so the page gives none. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
Michigan calls it the CY endorsement, and this unofficial Michigan motorcycle endorsement practice test covers the law behind it: 98 questions from the Michigan Vehicle Code, each with its MCL section. It doubles as a Michigan motorcycle permit practice test for the 180-day permit and its ban on night riding. Riding technique is not included. Statutes checked September 2026.

Helmet choice at 21, footpegs, handlebars
MCL 257.658 lets a rider of 21 or older go without a crash helmet, but only with $20,000 of first-party medical benefits and, for the operator, two years of endorsement or a passed course. MCL 257.658a keeps a passenger off unless their feet reach the pegs. Handlebars stop 30 inches above the empty saddle, and nobody may pass between lines of traffic.
What Michigan publishes about the written test
The Secretary of State's Motorcycle riders page says a Temporary Instruction Permit takes a vision test and the motorcycle written knowledge test. That is the Michigan motorcycle permit test people ask about. The page prints a $16 fee for a first CY endorsement or permit, but no question count or pass mark. So this site set Exam mode at 25 questions. The score has no pass or fail. MCL 257.312b waives the tests after an approved course.
Noise limits are exact: 86 DBA where the limit tops 35 mph, 82 DBA at 35 mph or less, 95 DBA in the stationary test.
MCL 257.710e, the general safety belt law, skips motorcycles and mopeds, so check which machine each question names.

Questions and answers
Do I need the endorsement for a moped or an autocycle in Michigan?
No for both. MCL 257.312a(2) lets a moped, which MCL 257.32b limits to 100 cc and 30 mph on a level surface, run on a valid operator's or chauffeur's license or a special restricted moped license. Subsection (1) exempts an autocycle from the motorcycle indorsement. A 150 cc scooter that reaches 55 mph is a motorcycle.
What are the limits on a Michigan motorcycle permit?
MCL 257.306 gives 180 days under the constant visual supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator aged 18 or older, with no night riding and no passenger. At 16 or 17 the applicant must be enrolled in, or have completed, an approved safety course, and nobody under 18 gets the endorsement without passing it.
Who wrote these Michigan questions?
This site did, from the Michigan Compiled Laws. It is unofficial, not affiliated with the Michigan Department of State or the Secretary of State, and has never seen the state's questions. Riding technique is in the Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual.
