How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial Michigan permit practice test holds 164 free questions from the Michigan Vehicle Code, each naming its MCL section, plus 48 on federal road signs. The answers are Michigan's own numbers: 70 mph on a freeway, 20 feet behind a stopped school bus, 3 feet around a bicycle.

Michigan has no DMV

The Department of State, headed by the Secretary of State, gives the written knowledge test. Adults 18 and older pass it for a Temporary Instruction Permit. Teens take the Segment 1 exam in driver education. The Vehicle Code has its own details: keep to the extreme right-hand lane as a rule (MCL 257.634), give a bicycle 3 feet, crossing a no-passing line if that is safe (MCL 257.636), and expect a doubled fine for a moving violation in a work zone (MCL 257.601b).

What the Secretary of State publishes

Its new driver pages, checked 18 September 2026, describe a multiple-choice test with a road sign part. Online, the Operator section takes about 45 minutes and the Signs segment about 15, for a $6.50 fee. An office test has no fee. A failed test is retaken on a different day, and a pass lasts one year.

  • Learn the 20s together: stop 20 feet from a school bus with red lights flashing, and park 20 feet from a crosswalk.
  • Sections 710d (child seats) and 682 (school buses) changed on 2 April 2025. Older study material may be out of date.
  • After the knowledge test, adults hold a permit 30 days before the skills test, and teens log 50 supervised hours.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Michigan permit test?

The Secretary of State does not say. Its new driver pages and What Every Driver Must Know (October 2025), checked 18 September 2026, give no question count or pass mark. Exam mode's 25 questions are our number. Switch to Exam mode below the question and press Start the exam. You finish with a score and a line per topic.

Is there a Michigan Segment 2 practice test here?

Not a separate one. Per the Secretary of State's teen page, Segment 2 is at least six hours of classroom instruction, open after 30 supervised hours and three months on a Level 1 license, and its state exam needs 70%. Use these law questions as review.

Is there a Michigan driving test questions and answers PDF?

Make one here. Print question sheet builds a paper test of the next 25 questions, and Print answer key lists each answer with its source. Your browser can save both as PDFs. It is not the state's test. This page covers the written test. For the road test, read the state's Driving Skills Test Study Guide.
