How it works

The Department of Licensing asks 40 multiple-choice questions, and 32 right pass. This unofficial Washington permit practice test takes 340 questions from Title 46 of the Revised Code of Washington, links each to its section, and adds 48 on road signs. Use it for Washington permit test practice on local rules.

No DMV in this state: who hands you the test

Washington has no DMV. The agency is the Department of Licensing (DOL). Approved driver training schools and testing locations give the knowledge test, and the DOL says a pass stays good for two years. A 15-year-old enrolled in a driver training course can get the permit first, since RCW 46.20.055 lets the department waive the written test. Without a course, the permit waits until 15 and a half.

About that 40-question PDF

People ask for a 40-question practice PDF from the DOL. On its pages checked in September 2026, the DOL offers the Washington Driver Guide as a PDF and a 5-question online practice test. Exam mode, below the question, runs full length instead: 40 questions, 32 right to pass. Press Start the exam. Its result reads Passed or Below the mark, then scores each topic. For paper, Print on that result lists the 40 questions, and a tick on With answer key adds their answers. Most print windows can save either as a PDF.

  • RCW 46.61.672: holding a phone counts as use, even at a red light.
  • On a two-lane highway a slow vehicle with five or more vehicles lined up behind must turn off wherever a safe turnout exists (RCW 46.61.427).
  • The code has no point system. RCW 46.20.2892 suspends for 60 days after three moving violations in one year, or four in two.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Washington knowledge test, and how many can you miss?

Forty, and you can miss 8: 32 correct pass, by the Department of Licensing's testing page, checked in September 2026. It lists 12 test languages. Read the Washington Driver Guide alongside this Washington state permit practice test.

Is a DMV practice test WA learners find online the real DOL test?

No. This page does not hold the DOL's live questions. It is unofficial practice written from the statutes, with the section shown under each explanation. The agency's own practice test has 5 questions.

What changes when a Washington permit becomes an intermediate license?

RCW 46.20.075 sets the terms: age 16, six months with a permit, and 50 supervised hours, 10 at night. For the first six months, no passengers under 20 from outside the immediate family. After that, at most three. Driving between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. needs a licensed driver aged 25 or older, apart from school, religious or work trips.
