How this list was compiled: Written from two bodies of District of Columbia law. (1) Title 18 of the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations, Vehicles and Traffic, as published by the Office of Documents and Administrative Issuances at https://dcregs.dc.gov/ (chapters 1, 3, 7, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24). Each section's text was downloaded from its dcregs.dc.gov section page on 2026-09-18 and 2026-09-19, and each question links to that page, in the form https://dcregs.dc.gov/Common/DCMR/SectionList.aspx?SectionNumber=18-2200. (2) The D.C. Official Code, Titles 31 and 50, as published by the Council of the District of Columbia at https://code.dccouncil.gov/. That site asks readers not to scrape it and to use its bulk download, so the section text was read on 2026-09-19 from the Council's own bulk publication at https://github.com/DCCouncil/law-html (publication dated 2026-05-19), and each question links to the section's page on code.dccouncil.gov. Exam format facts on the page (75-minute time limit, retest after three full calendar days, six tries in 12 months) come from the DC DMV at https://dmv.dc.gov/service/knowledge-tests, and the fees from https://dmv.dc.gov/book/dmv-fees/driver-license-fees. Agency pages checked 2026-09-19. Licence: Own work. How it works

A District learner's permit starts at 16, a provisional permit at 16 and a half, a full license at 17. This unofficial Washington DC permit practice test draws 336 free questions from Title 18 DCMR and the D.C. Code, each linked to its section, plus 48 on road signs. Law read 19 September 2026.

75 minutes, six tries, no printed question count

Checked 19 September 2026, dmv.dc.gov allows 75 minutes for the GRAD or learner permit knowledge test and 60 for the standard one. Run past the clock and you fail. It prints no question count or pass mark. The agency's DC DMV Practice Knowledge Test says it holds no actual exam questions. Treat any DMV practice test DC residents find online the same way.

Streetcar doors, 20 mph blocks, a hand on the phone

Figures the District wrote itself belong at the front of DC driving test practice. With no sign posted the limit is 20 mph, and 15 in an alley (18 DCMR 2200). Twenty over is reckless driving by speed alone (D.C. Code 50-2201.04). Pass a streetcar stopped for riders with no safety zone and you halt at least 5 feet behind its door (2211.4). Holding a phone in moving traffic breaks 50-1731.04.

  • Section 50-1401.01: learners drive only from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., beside a belted license holder 21 or older.
  • Ten points suspends a license, 12 revokes it (18 DCMR 303). Camera tickets add none, and driving alone on a learner's permit adds 5.
  • Use DC permit test practice to fix the provisional curfew: 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday nights, 12:01 a.m. on weekends and throughout July and August.

Questions and answers

Does the real exam match a DC DMV practice test 150 questions long?

Nothing we read supports that number. The agency's knowledge tests page gives time limits and retest rules but no count, and 18 DCMR 104 sets none. Exam mode, below the question, asks 25, a length we picked, with no clock or pass mark.

What does a learner permit cost, and what follows a failed test?

The DC DMV fee page, checked 19 September 2026, lists $20 for a learner permit and $10 for a knowledge test at a service center. After a fail you wait three full calendar days, and a sixth fail inside 12 months shuts you out until 12 months after the first (18 DCMR 104.10).

Are these the questions the District asks?

No. The exam belongs to the DMV and this site holds no copy. Its driver manual and sample quiz were left alone. Each question began as a section of Title 18 DCMR or the D.C. Code and links there. Where those differ on permit ages, the statute wins.
