How it works
A Kansas instruction permit can start at age 14, and the written test behind it is short: 25 multiple choice questions, 20 correct to pass. This unofficial Kansas permit practice test runs deeper, with 273 questions written from the Kansas Statutes Annotated, each linked to its section on the Legislature's site, and 48 on national road signs. Statutes read 18 and 19 September 2026.

The Kansas Driving Handbook, revised February 2022, says the knowledge test has no clock and usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. The Division of Vehicles, part of the Department of Revenue, gives it at full-service driver license centers and online, on a computer with a front-facing camera, in English or Spanish.
Kansas rules a generic quiz gets wrong
K.S.A. 8-1558 sets 30 mph in an urban district, 55 on county and township roads, 65 on other highways and 75 on designated separated multilane highways. Headlights go on whenever rain, sleet or snow keeps the wipers in continuous use (8-1703). The move-over duty in 8-15,116 reaches any stopped vehicle showing hazard lamps, flares, cones or reflective triangles, not only police cars and tow trucks.
K.S.A. 8-1551 makes a stop mandatory when a train within about 1,500 feet sounds a signal and is an immediate hazard.
Under K.S.A. 8-2,100 the supervising driver is 21 or older with a year of experience, and nobody else may ride in the front seat.
Kansas counts convictions, not points: 8-255 allows a suspension after three moving violations inside 12 months.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Kansas permit test, and how many can you miss?
Twenty-five, and you can miss 5: 20 correct (80 percent) pass, per the Kansas Driving Handbook, checked 19 September 2026. A retake is allowed the next working day for a $1.50 re-exam fee. Under K.S.A. 8-240, four failures within six months means a six-month wait.
What does a Kansas instruction permit cost, and who can get one?
The Division of Vehicles fee chart, marked updated May 2023 and checked 19 September 2026, lists the learner's permit at $10: $2 plus an $8 photo fee. K.S.A. 8-2,100 opens the permit at 14, requires a parent or guardian's written application under 16, and makes it valid one year.
Does Kansas publish a practice test of its own?
In two small forms: a short set of sample questions in the handbook, and a voice assistant skill that reads multiple choice questions aloud. This page is unofficial: every question names its statute section, and this site has never seen the state's exam.
