How this list was compiled: Written from the Kansas Statutes Annotated, chapter 8 (Automobiles and Other Vehicles), sections 8-2,100, 8-2,101, 8-234b, 8-235, 8-239, 8-240, 8-1438, 8-1439, 8-1439a, 8-1562, 8-1594, 8-1595, 8-1596, 8-1597, 8-1598, 8-1738, 8-1740, 8-1801, 8-1802, 8-1803, 8-1804, 8-1805, 8-1807, 8-1808, each read on the Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes site, https://www.ksrevisor.org/statutes/, on 2026-09-30. Each question names its section and links to it. That a written test is part of the examination is K.S.A. 8-240(a)(1) (vision, written and driving), and 8-240(a)(2) excuses class M applicants with Motorcycle Safety Foundation or Department of Defense training from further written and driving testing. The Kansas Department of Revenue's driver's license page, https://www.ksrevenue.gov/dovdrlic.html (read 2026-09-30), links the Kansas Motorcycle Handbook; no Department of Revenue page giving the number of questions or a pass mark for the motorcycle written test could be opened on 2026-09-30, so neither is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Kansas motorcycle permit test practice has 55 questions from chapter 8 of the Kansas Statutes, with the section under each. It covers the law only; riding technique is in the Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, so study that too.

Class M, the permit and who rides with you
A motorcycle registered in Kansas needs a class M license (K.S.A. 8-235). The instruction permit is open from age 14. The holder rides with an adult of at least 21 who holds a class M license, on a motorcycle nearby or, for a holder under 17, as the passenger (8-2,100, 8-239). Pass the driving test on a three-wheeled motorcycle and the license is limited to three-wheelers (8-240).
What Kansas law says about the test
K.S.A. 8-240 makes the examination three tests: vision, written and driving. A class M applicant who gives the division a Motorcycle Safety Foundation completion form is excused from further testing. No state page giving the number of questions or the pass mark could be opened in September 2026, so none is shown.
Only riders under 18 must wear a helmet, but every operator needs eye protection unless the windscreen is at least 10 inches tall (8-1598).
Questions and answers
How old do you have to be to get a motorcycle permit in Kansas?
Fourteen. K.S.A. 8-2,100 lets a person aged 14 to 16 apply for an instruction permit to operate a motorcycle after passing every part of the examination except the driving test. Riders 17 and older apply under 8-239.
Can you carry a passenger on a motorcycle in Kansas?
Only if the motorcycle is designed to carry more than one person. K.S.A. 8-1594 puts the passenger on a seat built for two or a seat firmly attached behind or beside the operator, and 8-1597 requires a seat and footrests.
Is this the Kansas motorcycle permit online test?
No. This is not a government website, is not affiliated with the Kansas Department of Revenue and has never seen the state's questions. Every answer here rests on a section of chapter 8 of the Kansas Statutes.
