Licence: Own work built on a public-domain U.S. government text. The question wording and the accepted answers quoted in each explanation are the USCIS list, a work of the U.S. government, copied word for word. The answer choices, the short notes that open each explanation and the multiple-choice format were written for this site; the real test is oral and has no answer choices.

How it works

This unofficial citizenship practice test, not a government website, holds both USCIS civics lists, word for word. Filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025? Study the 128 questions of the 2025 test. Filed before that date? Study the 100 of the 2008 test. Exam mode follows your list: 20 questions (2025 test) or 10. Lists and office holders were checked against uscis.gov on September 19, 2026.

2025 or 2008: which test applies to you

USCIS sorts applicants by filing date, as its test updates page said on September 19, 2026. If you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, the officer uses the 2008 test: up to 10 questions from the list of 100, and 6 right pass. If you filed on or after that date, you take the 2025 test: up to 20 questions from the list of 128, and 12 pass. Choose your list in the Question set menu. Exam mode follows your list: on the 2008 and 65/20 tests the officer asks 10 and 6 pass, the same 60 percent. The citizenship test in Spanish holds the 2008 list for applicants who qualify to test in their own language.

How the interview test runs

The USA naturalization civics test is spoken: you answer aloud, in your own words. On the 2025 test the officer stops once you have 12 right or 9 wrong, and on the 2008 test at 6 right or 5 wrong. For the English test you read one sentence aloud and write one, with up to three offered for each. Source: USCIS Policy Manual, read September 19, 2026.

How these banks were built

Each question is copied from the USCIS list, and its section headings, shortened, serve as the topic filter. The correct choice is one accepted response, the explanation quotes them all, and the wrong choices and notes are ours. Four questions per list depend on where you live, so their choices describe the office and name nobody. Exam mode marks nothing until you finish and does not stop early as an officer does.

  • Answer aloud before you pick a choice. The interview offers none.
  • Look up your two U.S. senators, your representative, your governor and your state capital. USCIS points to senate.gov, house.gov and usa.gov/states-and-territories.
  • Recheck the President, Vice President, Speaker and Chief Justice on the USCIS test updates page (uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates) the week of your interview.
  • Short, regular U.S. citizenship test practice works best: one topic from the Start from menu under the question, then Missed for your wrong answers. Before Exam mode, go back to All topics and All.
  • For a printable US citizenship test, finish a round, press Print on the score card and tick With answer key. Add all brings the rest of the list. Clear my progress, under More options, erases what this browser keeps.

Questions and answers

What happens if you fail the citizenship test?

USCIS gives two opportunities per application. If you fail any part of the English or civics test at the first interview, USCIS schedules another between 60 and 90 days later, and the officer retests only the part you failed, on a different set of questions. Missing that appointment counts as a failed attempt unless USCIS excuses it. Source: USCIS Policy Manual, read September 19, 2026.

What happens if I fail the citizenship test twice?

USCIS denies the application. You may request a hearing before an immigration officer on Form N-336, which USCIS says to file within 30 calendar days of receiving the decision, or 33 if it was mailed, and the failed part is given once more at that hearing. For advice on your own case, see an immigration lawyer or an accredited representative.

How many US civics test questions will the officer ask?

Up to 20 of the 128 on the 2025 test, and you need 12 right. Up to 10 of the 100 on the 2008 test, and you need 6. Applicants who were 65 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident when they filed (the 65/20 rule) get 10 of the 20 starred questions on their list and need 6.

Where can I find sample writing sentences for the citizenship test as a PDF?

USCIS does not publish its test sentences, as a PDF or otherwise. It publishes a writing vocabulary list, and the sentences are built from those words. These five are ours and use only list words: Citizens can vote. We pay taxes. Alaska is the largest state. Washington was the first President. Independence Day is in July.

Is this the real citizenship test?

No. It is unofficial US citizenship test practice and not a government website. The questions and accepted responses come from the USCIS lists, but the four-choice format is ours. Nothing here is legal advice. The official study tools are at uscis.gov/citizenship. Add the free USCIS reading and writing vocabulary lists to your US citizenship test prep.
