How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.

How it works

PennDOT's knowledge test has 18 questions, and 15 right pass it. This unofficial Pennsylvania permit practice test goes wider: 174 questions from Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, plus 48 on federal road signs. No agency wrote or reviewed it. Every explanation links to its section as the law read on 18 September 2026.

Who gives the test and how it runs

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation gives the knowledge test at its Driver License Centers. Its online Driver's Manual says it covers traffic signs, driving laws and safe driving practices. You get one attempt a day, and a failed test can be retaken the following business day. Exam mode, below the question, asks the same 18. The result reads Passed at three misses, Below the mark at four, and scores each topic.

Where Pennsylvania law departs from a generic bank

A national quiz says to signal 100 feet before a turn. Section 3334 agrees only below 35 mph. Above it the signal starts 300 feet back. Section 4302 turns the headlights on whenever the wipers run. Passing a bicycle takes 4 feet under section 3303. Section 3316.1 bans holding a phone even at a red light, and its 12-month warning period is over, so the $50 fine applies.

  • Section 3345(d): a school bus shows amber lights 150 to 300 feet before its stop, then red.
  • Stop at least 10 feet back from a school bus under section 3345, or face $250, five points and a 60-day suspension.
  • Six points, or one conviction for 26 mph over the limit, suspends a driver under 18 for 90 days under section 1538(e).

Questions and answers

What do you need to take your permit test in PA?

Bring the completed DL-180 application, with the back filled in by a health care provider, and the DL-180TD consent form if you are under 18. Add original proof of birth date and identity, a signed Social Security card and the fee. Source: PennDOT's online manual, read 18 September 2026. Applicants over 18 add two proofs of residency. Nobody can apply before the 16th birthday.

Are these the PA permit test answers?

No. This site has never seen PennDOT's question pool, and nothing here is copied from the Driver's Manual. Each question was written from a section of Title 75 and shows that section, so you learn the rule, not a key.

What happens after I pass the knowledge test?

The examiner issues a learner's permit valid for one year. Under 18, you wait six months and log 65 supervised hours, 10 at night and 5 in bad weather, before the road test. Section 1503 then keeps a junior driver off the road from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
