How it works

Illinois law, not a national question list, supplies every keyed choice in this unofficial Illinois permit practice test: 227 questions written from the Illinois Vehicle Code, each linked to its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. The Secretary of State did not write or review it. Statutes read 18 September 2026.

The Secretary of State gives the exam

Illinois licenses drivers through the Secretary of State, at facilities its 2026 Rules of the Road calls DMVs, and gives one written exam with a vision screening. Section 6-109 of the Vehicle Code orders questions on driving safely around bicycles and at least one on approaching a stationary emergency vehicle. A construction zone limit applies with or without workers present (section 11-605.1). In unincorporated areas a special school speed zone is a no-passing zone (11-707).

What the Vehicle Code puts in this bank

Illinois numbers decide questions: 70 mph on interstates and tollways, 30 in an urban district, 15 in an alley under section 11-601. Scott's Law, section 11-907, has you change lanes or slow for a stopped vehicle showing flashing lights, fined $250 to $10,000. Passing a bicycle takes 3 feet. Section 12-610.2, amended effective 31 July 2026, names video calls, social media and smart glasses.

  • Scott's Law on a four-lane highway: the first duty is to change into a lane not next to the stopped vehicle, if that is safe.
  • An applicant under 18 holds the instruction permit at least nine months before a graduated license (section 6-107).
  • School zones under section 11-605: 20 mph when children are present, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days, $150 minimum fine, $300 the second time.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Illinois permit test?

No published number exists. The 2026 Rules of the Road and the Secretary of State's driver FAQ pages, read 18 September 2026, print no question count or pass mark. Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's number, with no pass mark. Switch to Exam mode below the question and press Start the exam. You get a score and a line for each topic. The manual does promise three attempts within one year of paying the fee.

Is there an Illinois study guide or a road signs cheat sheet?

The state's own Illinois Rules of the Road, free at ilsos.gov, is the study guide, and study questions close most chapters. This page has no one-page sheet. Its 48 sign questions drill shape, color and symbol.

Does this page cover the road test too?

No, only the written exam. The manual lists the driving exam separately, and the practice for that is supervised driving: section 6-107 requires 50 hours, 10 of them at night, before a graduated license.
