Scoring key

Unofficial practice sheet
No Hawaii examiner made this sheet. The rows come from chapter 19-122; tallying one mark for each lapse is our choice.
No points in the rule
An applicant passes by satisfactorily demonstrating the eight items: HAR 19-122-14(b). No point value or pass number is printed, so this sheet draws no pass line.
Brake reaction figures 25 ft
From 20 miles per hour: not more than 25 feet from brakes applied to a complete stop, reaction time not more than three-fourths of a second, reaction time distance 22 feet, total stopping distance 47 feet.
Any test-ending event test ends
The examiner discontinues the test immediately: HAR 19-122-19.
Wait before a retest 1 week
A mandatory wait of at least one week and not more than thirty days before retesting (19-122-6); at least one week after a test discontinued for the first four events.

How it works

An unofficial study guide to the Hawaii driver's license road test, as a score sheet, built from sections 19-122-14 and 19-122-19 of the Hawaii Administrative Rules, read October 5, 2026. Not an examiner's form; this page books no test.

Mark a practice drive

1. Press Print blank sheet and take the paper along.

2. On the drive, the supervising driver your permit requires marks paper only at stops, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

3. Parked, type each row's marks under that drive. The sheet adds up the eight rows.

4. Type 1 beside each part of the course the route covered, and beside any event that would end a real test.

5. Type the date in place of a drive's name.

Questions and answers

What is on the Hawaii road test?

For a car, the state rule lists eight things to show: starting, stopping, steering and turning, reversing, observance of signs and signals, clutch synchronization with acceleration and deceleration, brake reaction, and parking parallel to a curbing on the right and on the left.

How is the Hawaii road test scored?

The rule says an applicant passes by satisfactorily demonstrating the eight items. It prints no point value and no pass number, so this sheet counts marks and draws no pass line. How an examiner marks a drive is not in the rule.

What ends a Hawaii road test early?

Section 19-122-19 has the examiner discontinue a test at once for an accident, dangerous or reckless driving, a serious traffic violation, refusing or failing to follow instructions, or a vehicle that turns out to be in unsafe condition.

How long is the wait to retake a road test in Hawaii?

After a failed test, section 19-122-6 sets a mandatory waiting period of at least one week but not more than thirty days. A test discontinued for an accident, dangerous driving, a serious violation or instructions not followed carries at least one week.

Is parallel parking on the Hawaii road test?

Yes. The rule's parking item is done in a business district, parallel to a curbing on the right and on the left, within the space provided, with smooth execution and reasonably good judgment of distance and timing.

All 27 lines

To pass, the applicant shows: Hawaii Administrative Rules 19-122-14(b) 9

  • 1. Starting The rule's first item: the engine is started without difficulty and the vehicle is placed in motion smoothly. Count each start that was neither.
  • 2. Stopping The vehicle is brought to a smooth and comfortable stop, the rule says, and no more. Count each stop that was not.
  • 3. Steering and turning A steady course with no swaying in traffic, and left and right turns executed in compliance with traffic regulations. Count each sway and each turn made some other way.
  • 4. Reversing Kept on a steady course in reverse, with a satisfactory sense of direction while backing. Count each time the car left its line going backward.
  • 5. Signs and signals Strict adherence to traffic signs and signals, speed restrictions and pedestrian right-of-way; an arm or mechanical signal before a turn and an arm signal before a stop. Count each one missed.
  • 6. Clutch, gas and slowing With a manual transmission the clutch goes in and out smoothly and gradually when starting forward, reversing or stopping, on level ground or an upgrade. In every vehicle, speeding up and slowing down are gradual and steady. Count each jerk.
  • 7. Brake reaction The rule's braking item, with distances of its own that the key prints. A passenger cannot measure feet, so count each stop where the brake went on late.
  • 8. Parking, right and left Parallel to a curbing on the right and on the left, within the space provided, in a business district: smooth and unfaltering, with reasonably good judgment of distance and timing. Count each attempt that was not.
  • Marks for the drive Total of the eight tallies in a column. Hawaii's rule sets no point value, so this figure is ours and nothing official.

What the course includes: 19-122-14(a)(2) 7

  • Course parts covered The six rows above added: how much of the rule's course this practice route took in. It scores nothing.
  • Heavy traffic The rule has the applicant drive through heavy traffic and brake properly when stopping, following and driving through it. Type 1 if the drive met some.
  • Standing start on a grade Skill with the clutch or transmission when moving on a slight grade from a standing start, going forward or reversing. Type 1 if the drive had one.
  • Three right, three left turns If possible, at least three right turns and three left turns, taking in every turning situation a driver might meet. Type 1 if the route had them.
  • Through a business district The course in the rule drives through a business district, and the parallel parking is done in one. Type 1 if this practice drive went through one.
  • Two stop signs, two signals If possible the course includes at least two stop signs and two traffic signals. Type 1 if the route had that many of each.
  • Two unmarked intersections If possible, at least two unmarked intersections, which may be of a kind where the view of cross traffic is partly hidden. Type 1 if the route had two.

The examiner discontinues the test: 19-122-19 6

  • Dangerous or reckless driving The applicant drives dangerously or recklessly. The rule defines neither word here; type 1 if the supervising driver had to take over.
  • Instructions not followed The applicant refuses or fails to follow the instructions of the examiner. In practice, type 1 if a plain direction was refused or missed.
  • Serious violation on the drive The applicant commits a serious traffic violation. The section does not list which ones; type 1 for any the supervising driver would call serious.
  • Test-ending events How many of the five were ticked. The examiner discontinues a real test at once on any of them, so they sit apart from the marks.
  • Vehicle in an accident First on the rule's list: the motor vehicle being used is involved in an accident. Type 1 if it happened on this drive.
  • Vehicle turns out unsafe It becomes apparent that the vehicle being used is in an unsafe condition. The applicant provides the vehicle, in serviceable condition. Type 1 if a fault showed up.

  • Any test-ending event The examiner discontinues the test immediately: HAR 19-122-19.
  • Brake reaction figures From 20 miles per hour: not more than 25 feet from brakes applied to a complete stop, reaction time not more than three-fourths of a second, reaction time distance 22 feet, total stopping distance 47 feet.
  • No points in the rule An applicant passes by satisfactorily demonstrating the eight items: HAR 19-122-14(b). No point value or pass number is printed, so this sheet draws no pass line.
  • Unofficial practice sheet No Hawaii examiner made this sheet. The rows come from chapter 19-122; tallying one mark for each lapse is our choice.

How this list was compiled: From the Hawaii Administrative Rules, title 19, chapter 122 (rules on the examination of applicants for driver's licenses and permits), read 2026-10-05 in the Hawaii Department of Transportation's own copy: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/files/2021/08/19-122-std-format.pdf, which the Department lists as Chapter 19-122 at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/home/doing-business/hawaii-administrative-rules/. That file is a scan of the filed rule (amendment and compilation of July 19, 2021) and was read page by page. Sections used: 19-122-14, on-street skill test for category 3 light motor vehicles (history note: Eff 8/26/82; am and comp 6/15/91; comp 12/2/00; am and comp 11/30/02; comp 5/15/06; comp 5/2/08; comp 7/29/10; comp 10/14/11; comp 1/17/14; comp 11/4/16; am and comp July 19, 2021); 19-122-19, discontinuance of test (am and comp 11/4/16; comp July 19, 2021); 19-122-6, reexamination after failure (comp July 19, 2021). Read the same day for what category 3 covers: section 286-102(b)(3) of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, https://data.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol05_Ch0261-0319/HRS0286/HRS_0286-0102.htm. Taken from the rule, each in our own words: the eight things subsection (b) says an applicant satisfactorily demonstrates to pass, in its order; six parts of the course in subsection (a)(2); the five events of 19-122-19; the waiting periods. Ours, not the state's: the layout, counting one mark for each lapse, typing 1 for a course part or an event, and the practice reading of the brake reaction row (the rule gives distances, which this sheet prints in the key and does not measure). The rule prints no point value and no pass number, so the sheet counts marks and prints no pass line. Nothing is taken from the Hawaii Driver's Manual or from a county's form. This is not the form an examiner of drivers uses and it cannot be handed in as one; nobody at the state or a county has seen it. Licence: own work
