How it works

Two scores decide the Indiana knowledge exam, traffic maneuvers and traffic signs, each needing 80 percent. This unofficial Indiana permit practice test feeds both: 286 free questions from Title 9 of the Indiana Code, read on the General Assembly's site on 18 September 2026, plus 48 on federal road signs.

One BMV exam, two scores, no appointment

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles licenses Indiana drivers and gives one walk-in computer exam at its branches, scored in two parts, with signs marked apart from rules. Title 9 writes down roundabout law few states have: drivers yield to a vehicle at least 40 feet long or 10 feet wide that is driving through the roundabout beside them (IC 9-21-8-10.5). Passing a bicycle takes 3 feet, even across a no-passing line when that is safe (IC 9-21-8-5). The 48 sign questions fill six topics in the Topic menu, so give them their own days.

Permit at 15 or 16, license after 180 days

IC 9-24-7-1 makes the knowledge test a condition of the permit, with age 16, or 15 when enrolled in driver education. Under 18, practice beside a licensed relative aged 25 or older, a spouse aged 21 or an instructor. IC 9-24-3-2.5 wants 180 permit days and 50 supervised hours, 10 at night. For 180 licensed days under 21, IC 9-24-11-3.5 limits driving from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • The BMV wants 80 percent on each of its two sections. Exam mode, below the question, blends them, so check the sign topics on their own.
  • IC 9-21-5-2 sets 30 mph in an urban district, 15 in an alley, 70 on a rural interstate and 55 where nothing else applies.
  • The move-over duty covers a tow truck showing amber lights: change lanes away from it, or slow to at least 10 mph under the posted limit (IC 9-21-8-35).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Indiana permit test?

The BMV gives a pass mark and no length: 80 percent on each of its two multiple choice sections. Its page and practice exam, read 18 September 2026, print no question count. Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's number.

Where are the Indiana permit test answers?

On each question: pick a choice, press Check answer, and the correct one appears with an explanation, its Indiana Code section and a link to the text. The questions were written for this site, so learn rules, not wording.

Do these questions come from the BMV?

No. The BMV's own practice exam and Driver's Manual are on in.gov. Every question here comes from Title 9, including the two laws IC 9-24-10-4 names for the examination: the school bus stop arm and a passenger's duty after a crash.
