How it works

Forty questions, six misses allowed: that is the class D knowledge test in the Idaho Transportation Department's July 2026 manual. This unofficial Idaho permit practice test runs rounds of that length from its own bank of 396 free questions, each from the Idaho Code and linked to its section, plus 48 on road signs. Code and manual read 19 September 2026.

What the state exam looks like

Idaho Code 49-313 has the county sheriff, a deputy or a department agent give the exam. There is no DMV behind it. The manual (July 2026, page 32) offers it in 12 languages, American Sign Language among them.

Where Idaho law departs from the usual

A cyclist may slow and yield at a stop sign (49-720). On a two-lane highway posted at 55 or more, a car may go up to 15 mph over the limit to pass a slower vehicle (49-654). A slow driver with three or more vehicles lined up behind must pull into a turnout (49-639).

  • Idaho has a single class D knowledge test, for the instruction permit and the license alike.
  • Under 17, the road runs through section 49-307: driver's training, then six months and 50 supervised hours, 10 after dark, beside a licensed driver of 21 or older. A traffic conviction cancels the permit and restarts the six months.
  • Holding a phone is a moving violation (49-1401A): $75 the first time, $150 the second, $300 after that within three years.

Questions and answers

What score passes the Idaho permit test?

34 out of 40, or 85 percent: the manual gives the knowledge test 40 questions and lets you miss up to six. Exam mode here uses those numbers and runs without a clock, because the manual names no time limit. Switch to Exam mode below the question and press Start the exam. Nothing is marked until you finish, then you see your score and how you did in each topic. Questions you miss wait under Missed until you get them right.

What happens if I fail the Idaho knowledge test?

You wait and pay again. Idaho Code 49-313 bars a retake within three calendar days of a failure and charges the testing fee on every attempt. The manual's fee table lists the knowledge test at $5.00 and the instruction permit at $20.00. Applicants must be 15 or older to test.

Does the Idaho Transportation Department stand behind this page?

It does not. This site is unofficial and has no tie to the department. Its manual says web-based practice tests are not an accurate picture of the Idaho knowledge test, apart from the sample questions on itd.idaho.gov. Read the manual and try those samples. This page adds the statute behind each rule.
