How this list was compiled: Exam facts: IDAPA 24.28.01.100.01, which names the written and practical examinations of the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology as the approved examination, and the Candidate Information Bulletin published for the Idaho Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board by its examiner (https://provexam.com/test-information/idaho-barber-and-cosmetology-services-lice-board/bulletin.pdf): Barber 1 theory, 60 questions of which 10 are unscored, 90 minutes, passing score 75. Questions: Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 58, the Barber and Cosmetology Services Act (https://legislature.idaho.gov/statutesrules/idstat/Title54/T54CH58/); IDAPA 24.28.01, Rules of the Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board (https://adminrules.idaho.gov/rules/current/24/242801.pdf); the bulletin; and the Board's own page (https://dopl.idaho.gov/bcb/). Each question names its section and links to it. Read 2026-10-16. Licence: Own work. Every question, wrong choice and explanation was written for this site from the statute, the rule, the bulletin and the Board page named. Nothing comes from the examination, a textbook, a prep course or a question pool.
How it works
This unofficial Idaho barber practice test asks our own questions on Idaho's Barber and Cosmetology Services Act, the Board's rules and the published exam outline. It is not affiliated with the Idaho Barber and Cosmetology Services Licensing Board or NIC.

What the Idaho barber written exam is
The Board's rule names the National-Interstate Council's written and practical examinations (IDAPA 24.28.01.100.01). The candidate bulletin (opened October 16, 2026) lists Barber 1 theory for the barber license: 60 questions, 10 of them unscored, in 90 minutes, passing score 75. Scientific concepts are 40 percent, hair care services 30, facial hair and skin care 20, implements and equipment 10.
What this page practices
That outline lists no state law, so this bank does not follow it. It asks Idaho's own text: the safety and disinfection rules, the barber and barber-stylist licenses, barber school and apprenticeship, shops, the Board and discipline. Hair, skin and shaving theory is not asked.
School route: 900 hours for a barber, 1,500 for a barber-stylist. Apprentice route: 1,800 and 3,000 (Idaho Code 54-5810).
A barber apprenticeship is completed within 57 weeks, a barber-stylist's within 94 (IDAPA 24.28.01.150.02).
Instruments are cleaned after each use, then disinfected before use on each patron, for the label's full contact time (IDAPA 24.28.01.200.03).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Idaho barber written exam?
The candidate bulletin lists Barber 1 theory at 60 questions in 90 minutes, 10 of them unscored pilot questions. Barber Styling theory, for the barber-stylist license, has 110 questions in the same time.
What score do you need to pass the Idaho barber exam?
The bulletin prints a passing score of 75 for the theory exam and 75 for the practical. Rounds on this page end with a score and no verdict, because they ask state law, not theory.
Is Idaho state law on the barber exam?
The published theory outline names four content areas and no Idaho law. Idaho Code 54-5815 still puts the Idaho laws and rules governing barbering in every barber school's curriculum, and the Board inspects shops under them.
Are these the real Idaho barber exam questions?
No. Each was written for this page from Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 58, IDAPA 24.28.01 and the candidate bulletin, with the section under each answer. Nothing comes from the examination or a textbook.
How many hours do you need for a barber license in Idaho?
At least 900 hours in a Board-approved barber school, or 1,800 as an apprentice (Idaho Code 54-5810). A student may sit the examination after 80 percent of the hours.
