Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.

How it works

Hawaii writes its driving rules into the Hawaii Revised Statutes, and this unofficial Hawaii permit practice test turns 175 of them into free questions, each with its section number. Another 48 cover federal road signs. Expect island specifics: a full stop for anyone in your half of a crosswalk, 20 feet behind a school bus, a $300 phone fine. Statutes fetched 18 September 2026.

The counties give the test, not the state

Hawaii has no statewide licensing counter. Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai counties each give the written test and issue the instruction permit, while the state Department of Transportation publishes the Hawaii Driver's Manual. Honolulu and Kauai also offer the test online.

Why the speed questions carry so few numbers

The traffic code holds almost no speed limits. Section 291C-102 leaves them to county ordinance and to signs placed by the director of transportation. The statutes do fix a few numbers: excessive speeding starts at 30 mph over the limit or at 80 mph anywhere, a school zone ticket costs $250, and the Daniel K. Inouye Highway is 60 mph from mile marker 12.

  • Section 286-108 names two rules the license exam has to cover: the mobile electronic device ban, and the ban on leaving a child under 9 unattended in a car for five minutes.
  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
  • A permit holder under 18 who drives between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. needs a licensed parent or guardian in the next seat, under section 286-110.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Hawaii permit test?

Thirty, all multiple choice. Honolulu describes a 30 question test with a one hour limit online and prints no pass mark. Kauai County fails an applicant with more than 6 errors, so 24 correct passes there. That mark is one county's, so Exam mode gives a score and no verdict. Both pages checked 18 September 2026.

Is this the online permit test the counties offer?

No. The online test from Honolulu and Kauai is the actual exam, taken for a fee. This page is unofficial practice written from the Hawaii Revised Statutes, and this site has never seen the counties' questions.

How old do you have to be for a Hawaii permit?

Fifteen years and six months, under section 286-104. The permit lasts one year, and a licensed driver aged 21 or older must sit beside you. At 16, after holding the permit for 180 days and finishing driver education, you can apply for a provisional license.
