What the Hawaii barber exam is

Since January 1, 2026 the Board's testing service lists one barber examination, the Barber Styling Theory test. Its Test Taker Guide (effective January 15, 2026; opened October 16, 2026) gives 85 scored and 10 unscored questions in 120 minutes, 75 percent to pass. Safety and infection control is 31 percent and shaving 22.

What this page practices

No topic of that outline is Hawaii law, so this bank asks Hawaii's own text: chapter 439A on the license, apprentices, permits, shops and citations, and chapter 16-73 of the rules on the training program and sanitary practices. Where the older rules and the 2022 statute differ, only the statute is asked.

  • The school route is 1,500 hours; the apprentice route is 3,000, inside 42 months at 20 hours a week or more (HRS 439A-6, 439A-7).
  • Styptic pencils, lump alum, sponges, powder puffs, neck dusters, shaving brushes and shaving mugs are prohibited in any shop (HAR 16-73-38).
  • Barber licenses renew by December 31 of each odd-numbered year (HRS 439A-14).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Hawaii barber exam?

The Test Taker Guide gives 85 scored questions and 10 unscored experimental ones, with 120 minutes to finish. A round on this page asks Hawaii's own law and rules.

What score do you need to pass the Hawaii barber exam?

At least 75 percent on the Barber Styling Theory test, by the Test Taker Guide. Rule 16-73-31 also makes not less than 75.00 points a passing score.

Is Hawaii state law on the barber theory test?

The published outline lists eight topics, from safety and infection control to shaving, and none is Hawaii law. The Board's training program still begins its theory list with Hawaii's barbering laws, rules and regulations.

Are these the real Hawaii barber exam questions?

No. Each was written for this page from HRS chapter 439A, HAR chapter 16-73, the Board's examination page and the Test Taker Guide, with the section under each answer. Nothing comes from the test or a textbook.

How many hours do you need for a barber license in Hawaii?

1,500 hours of training in a barber school, or 3,000 hours as a barber apprentice under a barber, cosmetologist or hairdresser, with an education equivalent to high school (HRS 439A-6).
