What the Hawaii part of each exam asks
Hawaii gives separate Property and Casualty exams, each with a general part and a Hawaii part. Every Hawaii part gives 23 scored questions to law common to all lines, then 3 or 4 to adjusters, surplus lines and rate regulation.
Studying for Property only or Casualty only
Property adds 6 questions: the standard fire policy, overinsurance, the Hawaii Property Insurance Association, the hurricane relief fund and condominium insurance. Casualty adds 15: the motor vehicle insurance law, financial responsibility, motorcycles and workers' compensation. Producer licensing and trade practices are on the Hawaii life and health page; adjuster licensing, the standard fire policy and overinsurance are on the adjuster page.
Nonrenewal notices are capped each year at 2 per cent of an insurer's policies in each rating territory (HRS 431:10C-111.5).
Motorcycle policies carry lower limits than cars: $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident and $10,000 property damage (HRS 431:10G-301).
The hurricane relief fund insures only property that already has an underlying property policy excluding the hurricane (HRS 431P-11).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Hawaii property and casualty exam?
There are two exams. The outlines effective January 1, 2026 give each general part 50 scored questions; the Hawaii part has 33 scored questions for Property and 41 for Casualty. Each part adds a few unscored pretest questions.
What score passes the Hawaii insurance exam?
The January 2026 candidate handbook gives a passing score of 70 and calls it a scaled score, not the number or percentage of questions answered correctly. It allows 75 minutes for a general part, 45 for the Property state part and 60 for Casualty.

HRS 431:10C-301(b) requires liability coverage of at least $40,000 per person and $80,000 per accident for accidental harm, and $20,000 for property damage. Personal injury protection benefits are limited to $10,000 per person (HRS 431:10C-103.5).
How much notice must a Hawaii insurer give to cancel a car insurance policy?
Thirty days by mail, or twenty for nonpayment of premiums, with a postal certificate of mailing (HRS 431:10C-112). After the first sixty days an insurer may cancel only for a suspended or revoked license or unpaid premiums (HRS 431:10C-111).
