What the Alaska state exam asks

Property and Casualty are separate exams, each with a general part and a state part. Both state parts give 30 of their scored questions to law common to all lines: the director, definitions, licensing, marketing practices and the guaranty association.

Studying for Property only or Casualty only

The other ten property questions are on kinds of insurance, binders and cancellation. The ten casualty questions add attorney fee coverage under Civil Rule 82, auto financial responsibility, uninsured motorist coverage, assigned risk, rideshare and workers' compensation.

  • Binders: oral or written, good for 90 days or until the policy is issued, extended only with the insurer's written approval (AS 21.42.240).
  • Uninsured motorist property damage carries a $250 deductible, and a hit-and-run must be reported within 24 hours (AS 28.22.201).
  • Surplus lines brokers collect a 2.7 percent tax on net premium and pay it with the quarterly report (AS 21.34.180).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Alaska property and casualty exam?

There are two exams. The outline effective March 3, 2025 gives each state part 40 scored questions plus 10 pretest questions, and each general part 50 scored questions. The September 2023 handbook allows 1 hour for a state part.

What score passes the Alaska insurance exam?

The candidate handbook gives a passing score of 70 and calls it a scaled score, not the number or percentage of questions answered correctly. A candidate who fails an exam and retakes it must retake the whole exam, Parts 1 and 2.

What are Alaska's minimum auto liability limits?

AS 28.20.440 sets $50,000 for bodily injury to or death of one person, $100,000 for two or more persons in one accident, and $25,000 for injury to or destruction of the property of others.

Is this Alaska property and casualty practice test free?
