How this list was compiled: Own questions, written from the Montana Code Annotated 2025 as published by the Montana Legislature at https://archive.legmt.gov/bills/mca/, read on October 12, 2026: Title 33 (chapters 1, 2, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24), sections 27-1-702, 61-6-103, 61-6-144 and 61-6-301 to 61-6-304, and Title 39, chapter 71. What the Montana state exam asks
Property and Casualty are separate exams, each with a general part and a state part. State: Casualty has 37 scored questions. Each state part gives 25 to law common to both: the commissioner, licensing, trade practices, rates and the guaranty association.
Studying for the Property exam only
Pick the topics the property outline names: cancellation and nonrenewal, surplus lines, credit information, and property valuation with the valued policy law. Auto and workers' compensation belong to the Casualty outline. Each answer links to its section of the 2025 Montana Code Annotated.
Cancellation: 10 days in midterm, 45 days for nonrenewal; a policy on a home needs 45 days, 20 for nonpayment (MCA 33-15-1103, 33-15-1105, 33-23-401).
Claims: pay or deny within 30 days of proof of loss, 60 if more information was reasonably requested (MCA 33-18-232).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Montana property insurance exam?
The outline effective March 2, 2026 gives State: Property 32 scored questions plus 5 pretest questions, and the June 2025 candidate handbook allows 45 minutes. General: Property is a separate part of 1 hour 15 minutes. Exam mode here uses 32 and 45.
What score passes the Montana insurance exam?
The Commissioner's licensing page says to pass the exam with a score of 75% or better. The candidate handbook calls 75 a scaled score, not a percent of questions answered, so this page gives a score and no pass or fail.
Does Montana have a valued policy law?
Yes. Under MCA 33-24-102, when insured improvements on real property are a total loss without criminal fault of the insured, the amount of insurance written is taken conclusively to be the true value and the true amount of loss.
Are these the real Montana state exam questions?
No. Each one was written for this page from the Montana Code Annotated on the Legislature's site. The state exam belongs to the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, whose office has not reviewed this page.
