How it works

Section 61-5-110 says Montana's knowledge test covers highway signs and state traffic laws. This unofficial Montana permit practice test turns Title 61 of the Montana Code Annotated into 327 free questions, each linked to its section, plus 48 on federal road signs. Statutes read 19 September 2026.

Speed law you will not meet in a national quiz

Section 61-8-303 posts 80 mph on rural interstates and 65 inside urbanized areas of 50,000 people or more. Other highways run 70 by day and 65 at night. In a passing zone on a two-lane road, you may go 10 mph over the limit to overtake. Under section 61-8-725, a ticket for 10 over by day or 5 over at night stays off your record.

From learner license to a first-year license

A learner license lasts one year and comes after the knowledge test and a vision check (61-5-106). Students in a traffic education course may hold one from 14 and a half. Under 18, you keep it six months and log 50 supervised hours, 10 after dark, before the road test (61-5-132). The first year then bars most driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. (61-5-133).

  • Pair the numbers in section 61-9-221: dim for oncoming traffic at 1,000 feet, and within 500 feet when following.
  • Seat belts are enforced only after a stop for something else, and the fine is $20 (61-13-103, 61-13-104). An unrestrained child under 6 and under 60 pounds is the exception.
  • Studded tires are legal from October 1 to May 31 (61-9-406).

Questions and answers

Is this a Montana DMV practice test from the state?

No. Montana licenses drivers through the Motor Vehicle Division of the Department of Justice, and this site has no tie to it. Every question was written from Title 61 as the Legislature published it on 19 September 2026. Nothing came from the Montana Driver Manual or the division's exam.

How many questions does the Montana permit test have, and what score passes?

This page gives no figure. Title 61 sets none: section 61-5-110 says only that the knowledge test covers highway signs and Montana traffic law, and no Motor Vehicle Division page was confirmed for the count or pass mark by 19 September 2026. Ask the exam station when you book. Exam mode, below the question, asks 25, this site's number, and scores a percentage with no verdict.

What alcohol limit applies to a Montana driver under 21?

An alcohol concentration of 0.02 or more is an offense under section 61-8-1002, against 0.08 for adults in noncommercial vehicles. A first conviction brings a fine of $100 to $500 and a 90-day suspension under section 61-8-1007. For THC, any amount counts when the driver is under 21.
