How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, 11th Edition (December 2023), Federal Highway Administration, https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm, checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the MUTCD section it was written from. Licence: Own work. Question wording, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD text; nothing is copied from a state driver manual or another practice test.
How it works
This unofficial Minnesota permit practice test asks 190 questions written from Minnesota Statutes chapters 169, 169A and 171, then adds 48 on federal road signs. Driver and Vehicle Services, which gives the state knowledge test, had no part in it. Every explanation names its section and subdivision, read 19 September 2026.

No DMV: Driver and Vehicle Services gives the test
Driver and Vehicle Services, DVS, part of the Department of Public Safety, gives the Class D knowledge test. A bicyclist may slow and go through a stop sign without stopping when no vehicle is near (section 169.222 subd. 4). A driver may cross the line in a no-passing zone to clear a slow bicycle, leaving 3 feet (169.18). Leaving a roundabout needs no 100-foot signal, and a U-turn near a curve or hill crest needs 1,000 feet of sight (169.19).
A study guide made of statute sections
Section 171.13 lists what the exam covers: traffic laws, signs, alcohol and drugs, rail crossings, slow-moving vehicles, school buses, bicycles and carbon monoxide, plus work zones from 1 January 2027. The state's Driver's Manual is the real Minnesota permit test study guide. This bank drills the numbers: 30 mph in an urban district, 10 in an alley, a 20-foot stop for a school bus, and $275 for a second hands-free violation.
At 15, the knowledge test needs proof of driver education enrollment, the Blue Card or Pink Card.
DVS allows one written test per day, and section 171.13 sets a $10 fee from the third try after two straight fails.
A permit holder under 18 may not use a phone while driving, hands-free or not, under section 171.05.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the permit test in MN?
DVS does not publish a count. The Minnesota Driver's Manual dated June 2026 and the DVS permit pages, read 19 September 2026, say the test mixes multiple choice and true-or-false questions and takes 80 percent to pass. Exam mode's 25 questions are this site's number. Switch to Exam mode below the question and press Start the exam. The result shows your score against 80 percent and a line for each topic.
Are these the real Minnesota test questions?
No. This site has not seen the DVS question pool. Each question was written from a section of Minnesota Statutes and links to it on the Revisor's site. DVS posts a 25-question sample test as a PDF.
Is this MN driving test practice or only the written test?
Only the written side. Practice for the road test is supervised driving: section 171.055 asks a teen's log to show 40 hours, 15 of them at night, plus ten more unless a parent completed the supplemental class.
