How it works

Alabama calls its permit a Stage I learner's license and issues it from age 15. This unofficial Alabama permit practice test holds 485 questions written from Title 32 of the Code of Alabama, read on 19 September 2026, plus 48 on federal road signs. Under section 32-5-240, wipers running in rain, sleet or snow means lamps on.

What the agency publishes about its exam

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), not a DMV, licenses Alabama drivers and gives the written exam. Its graduated license page, checked 19 September 2026, describes an exam based on the Alabama Driver Manual, a $5 exam fee and a $36.25 Stage I license fee. The road test is separate. To rehearse the written exam, press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks and topic scores come at the end.

Left lanes, move over and following distance

Section 32-5A-80 allows no more than 1.5 miles in an interstate's leftmost lane without completely passing another vehicle. The John Hubbard Move Over Act, section 32-5A-58.2, has you vacate the lane nearest a parked police car showing its lights or, if that is unsafe, slow to at least 15 mph under the posted limit. Section 32-5A-89 puts a number on following distance: at least 20 feet for each 10 mph of speed.

  • Section 32-6-7.2 sets Stage II's midnight to 6 a.m. driving limit. Section 32-5A-191 sets 0.08 percent in general and 0.02 under 21.
  • Press Missed under the question to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Flag saves a question, and Flagged brings the saved ones back. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
  • A construction zone moving violation is fined the greater of $250 or double the usual amount (section 32-5A-176.1).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the permit test in Alabama?

ALEA does not say. Its licensing pages and November 2024 Alabama Driver Manual, opened 19 September 2026, give no question count, pass mark or time limit. The manual says the test covers traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. Exam mode here asks 25, this site's own length, with no pass line.

Are these the Alabama permit test answers?

No. This site has never seen the agency's questions. Every question here was written from a section of the Code of Alabama and links to it on the Legislature's ALISON site. The Alabama Driver Manual covers safe driving technique, which this bank leaves out.

Who can take the Alabama permit test?

Anyone 15 or older, by ALEA's graduated license page. Under section 32-6-8 a 15-year-old drives only beside a parent, a guardian, an Alabama-licensed driver aged 21 or over, or a driving instructor.
