Unofficial practice sheet
Not the Division of Motor Vehicles' form. Rows restate the Driver Handbook and the state's rule; marking is our reading.
No points, no pass line
The handbook and the rule print no point value, no passing score and no list of failing events. The rule: pass or failure is based upon the ability to execute the required maneuvers, and the driver license examiner scores the test.
Seven calendar days 7 days
The wait before retaking a failed driving test for the regular Class C license, by the Division's tests page.
At least 60 years old
The Division may not require such a person to parallel park as part of a road test, G.S. 20-7(c).

All 42 lines

Named by both: North Carolina Driver Handbook (rev. May 2025), p. 11, and state rule 19A NCAC 03B .0201 10

  • Approach to a corner 'Approach corner' in the rule; 'approaches to intersections' in the handbook. Mark each approach that came in too fast or in the wrong place on the road.
  • Backing the car One word in each text. Mark each swerve and each time the learner did not look where the car was going.
  • Following another vehicle The handbook's words; the rule says 'following'. Mark each time the car ahead was followed too closely.
  • Left turn, each one The second of the rule's two turning maneuvers. Mark each left turn that went wrong.
  • Quick stop on command The handbook asks for the quickest safe stop you can make when told to stop. The rule puts quick stop first among its required maneuvers. Mark each one that was slow or unsteady.
  • Right turn, each one The rule lists right turns and left turns apart; the handbook says only 'turning'. Mark each right turn that went wrong.
  • Starts from rest 'Starts' in the rule; the handbook has 'stopping, starting and parking' on one line. Mark each rough or unsafe start.
  • Three-point turnabout Last on the handbook's list and second on the rule's, where it is just 'turnabout'. The handbook's three moves are on the Checklist sheet. Mark each extra move.
  • Traffic lights, each one 'Traffic lights' in the rule, 'approaches to traffic signals' in the handbook. Mark each light misjudged.
  • Use of lanes Three words that read the same in both texts: use of lanes. Mark each time the car was in the wrong lane or strayed from its own.

Named by the handbook only, p. 11 10

  • Approach to a stop sign The handbook names approaches to stop signs with those to intersections and signals. Mark each stop sign handled wrongly.
  • Clutch, if the car has one Graded in vehicles with standard transmissions, the handbook says. Mark each stall or grind; leave the row empty in an automatic.
  • Driving posture, graded Two words on the handbook's list: driving posture. Mark each time the learner slumped or sat out of reach of the controls.
  • Parking, kind not named The handbook does not say which kind of parking. State law bars the Division from requiring parallel parking of anyone at least 60. Mark each fault while parking.
  • Passing; being passed One handbook item with two sides, overtaking and being overtaken. Mark each fault on either side.
  • Stopping, ordinary First word of the handbook's line 'stopping, starting and parking'; the quick stop has its own row. Mark each rough or misplaced stop.
  • Turn signals given Half of a handbook line that also names the horn. Mark each signal left out, late or left on.
  • Use of the horn, graded The other half of that line: use of the horn. Mark each time it was used wrongly, or could not be found.
  • Yielding to other vehicles The second half of the same item. Mark each time another vehicle with the right of way was not given it.
  • Yielding to pedestrians The handbook's item is giving pedestrians and other vehicles the right of way. Mark here each time a person on foot was not given way.

Named by the rule only 4

  • Paying attention, by the rule The last of the rule's thirteen required maneuvers. Mark each lapse.
  • Skill marks, this drive The twenty-three rows above, one column per drive. The state prints no figure to set it against.
  • Use of brakes, by the rule Listed by the rule apart from the quick stop. Mark each harsh, late or needless use of the brake.
  • Vehicle operating equipment The rule's words are 'use of vehicle operating equipment'; it names no item of equipment. Mark each control the learner fumbled.

Before the road test: handbook p. 10, the rule, G.S. 20-7 6

  • Financial responsibility shown State law: no driver's license is issued until proof of financial responsibility is furnished, G.S. 20-7(c1). Type 1 when you hold the proof.
  • Knowledge test, 80 percent On traffic laws and safe driving practices; the rule asks for eighty percent correct. Type 1 when passed.
  • Traffic signs test passed Signs are identified by color and shape and each is explained; for a regular Class C license the rule asks for 9 of 12. Type 1 when passed.
  • Two forms of identification State law asks an applicant for at least two forms of identification approved by the Commissioner, at least one showing the residence address, G.S. 20-7(b1). Type 1 when both are in hand.
  • Vehicle of the license class The driving skills test is taken in a vehicle that represents the class of license wanted (handbook p. 11). Type 1 when the car to be used is.
  • Vision checked Vision is checked for a learner permit and for an original license. The rule's line for an unrestricted license is 20/40 or better in at least one eye. Type 1 when passed.

Three-point turnabout: handbook tip, p. 11 4

  • Checklist total, of nine Adds the nine rows above for each check; nine fills a column. North Carolina publishes no such total.
  • Turnabout: backward, right Then backward slowly, turning the wheel to the right, to a stop a few inches short of the right curb or the street's edge. Type 1 when done that way.
  • Turnabout: forward to finish Forward slowly while turning the wheel to the left; the handbook says this should complete the turnabout. Type 1 when it did.
  • Turnabout: forward, left Starting at the far right of the road: check for other traffic, signal left if clear, go forward slowly turning the wheel left, and stop a few inches short of the left curb or edge. Type 1 when done that way.

Scoring key 8

  • After all the other tests The driving test comes once the others are passed, is taken with a first license application, and is not required for a learner permit (handbook p. 10).
  • At least 60 years old The Division may not require such a person to parallel park as part of a road test, G.S. 20-7(c).
  • In actual traffic The rule calls the road test a measure of the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely in actual traffic situations.
  • Learner permit holder While driving, is accompanied by a person licensed for the vehicle being driven who is seated beside the permit holder (handbook p. 9).
  • No autocycle A person shall not use an autocycle to complete a road test, G.S. 20-7(c).
  • No points, no pass line The handbook and the rule print no point value, no passing score and no list of failing events. The rule: pass or failure is based upon the ability to execute the required maneuvers, and the driver license examiner scores the test.
  • Seven calendar days The wait before retaking a failed driving test for the regular Class C license, by the Division's tests page.
  • Unofficial practice sheet Not the Division of Motor Vehicles' form. Rows restate the Driver Handbook and the state's rule; marking is our reading.

How this list was compiled: From four texts of the State of North Carolina, all read 2026-10-04. First, the North Carolina Driver Handbook, revised May 2025, published by the Division of Motor Vehicles, pages 9 to 11: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Documents/nc-driver-handbook.pdf. No copyright line was found in the handbook. Second, the state's administrative rule on the driver's license examination, 19A NCAC 03B .0201, on the Office of Administrative Hearings' site: http://reports.oah.state.nc.us/ncac/title%2019a%20-%20transportation/chapter%2003%20-%20division%20of%20motor%20vehicles/subchapter%20b/19a%20ncac%2003b%20.0201.pdf. Third, the Division's page on driver license tests, the page to start from for a test, which is arranged with the Division, not here: https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Pages/driver-license-tests.aspx. Fourth, section 20-7 of the General Statutes: https://www.ncleg.gov/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-7.html. Taken from them, each in our own words and in an order of our own: the skills the handbook says are observed and graded (p. 11) and the thirteen required maneuvers of the rule, set side by side and sorted by which text names each; the handbook's three-step tip for the three-point turnabout (p. 11); the tests that come first, with the rule's figures for them; two lines of the statute. Ours, not the state's: the layout, the row names, the sorting into three groups, what counts as one mark in a row, and typing 1 for a line that is done. None of the four texts prints a point value, a passing score or a list of failing events, so these sheets print none. This is not a Division of Motor Vehicles form and cannot be handed in as one; nobody at the Division has seen it. Licence: own work

How it works

An unofficial NC road test checklist for practice before the NC DMV road test, drawn from the North Carolina Driver Handbook and the state's road test rule, read October 4, 2026. Not a DMV form; this page books no test.

NC road test practice, one drive at a time

1. The drive opens first. Press Print blank sheet, then choose Checklist and print it as well.

2. Riding beside the learner, the supervising driver your permit requires writes on the paper at stops only, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

3. Back in park, type the marks for each row. Rows are sorted by which state text names them.

4. On the checklist, type 1 for each test passed, each paper in hand and each turnabout move done the handbook's way.

5. The row holding the most marks leads off the next drive.

Questions and answers

How to pass NC DMV road test: what does the state grade?

The state's rule says pass or failure rests on your ability to execute the required maneuvers, and names thirteen: quick stop, turnabout, backing, approach corner, right turns, left turns, traffic lights, operating equipment, starts, lanes, brakes, following, and paying attention.

How to pass the NC road test: is there a points score?

None is published. The Driver Handbook and the rule print no point value, no passing score and no list of automatic failures; the examiner scores the test. So these sheets count marks and draw no pass line.

When do you take the NC driver's license road test?

After passing all the other tests: vision, traffic signs and knowledge. The handbook says the driving test is taken the first time you apply for a license and is not required for a learner permit.

How soon can you retake the North Carolina road test?

In seven calendar days, for a regular Class C license, the Division's page on driver license tests says.

Is this NC road test checklist from the DMV?

No. It is ours and unofficial. Rows restate what page 11 of the handbook and the state rule name, and how to mark a row is our reading. State law adds that nobody at least 60 may be required to parallel park.
