What to bring: Connecticut DMV road test page 7

  • Appointment confirmation page The Road Test Appointment Confirmation Page is first on the DMV page's list of what to bring. Type 1 when you have it.
  • Connecticut insurance card In the same name as the registration; for a leased vehicle the card may be in the lessee's name. Type 1 when it matches.
  • Current registration, in hand A valid, current registration certificate, kept in the vehicle and carried into the office. Type 1 when it is there.
  • Driver education certificate The DMV page says the certificate is sent to the department electronically. Type 1 once it has been sent.
  • Form R-229, fully completed The application for a non-commercial driver's license. The page asks for every part to be filled in. Type 1 when it is.
  • Learner's permit, or duplicate Arriving with neither loses the appointment and means paying another exam fee, the DMV page says. Type 1 when it is packed.
  • Trainer present, under 18 Under 18, a qualified trainer must come to the DMV office and sign a form. Type 1 when that person can come, or if you are 18 or older.

The vehicle: DMV road test page 11

  • Brake and signal lights all on A defective brake or signal light is on the list, and the page counts the high mount, or third, brake light. Type 1 if every one lights.
  • Braking system sound A defective braking system is on the list. Type 1 if nothing is wrong with it.
  • Every lug nut in place Missing lug nuts are on the list. Type 1 if none is missing on any wheel.
  • No dashboard warning lights A safety warning indicator lit on the dashboard keeps a vehicle out; the page's examples are SRS and ABS. Type 1 if none is lit.
  • No ignition interlock fitted The vehicle must not have one, unless the law requires the applicant to use it. Type 1 if that holds.
  • Ready, out of seventeen Seven papers plus ten car lines, totaled per check; 17 means nothing is outstanding. Our arithmetic, not the DMV's.
  • Seatbelts latch Defective seatbelts are on the list. Type 1 if each belt works.
  • Speedometer registers A defective speedometer is on the list. Type 1 if the needle or display follows the car's speed.
  • Tint within the rule After-market tint needs a Connecticut DMV tint compliance sticker fixed to the inspection report. Type 1 if the sticker is there or no tint was added.
  • Tires not worn or damaged Worn or damaged tires are on the list. Type 1 if all are sound.
  • Windows and windshield whole Cracked or damaged windows and windshields lead the DMV page's list of reasons a vehicle cannot be used. Type 1 if there are none.

Before driving off: DMV page and Driver's Manual (March 2023), p. 8 8

  • Headlights and high beams In the manual's list, and the commands sheet asks for the lights, the low beams and the high beams by name.
  • Heater and defroster Named together in the manual's equipment list. Count each control not found.
  • Horn, on the spoken command The manual lists the horn, and sounding it is one of the commands on the DMV's sheet.
  • Instrument panel warnings The manual lists being able to recognize any warning light on the instrument panel. Count each one not known.
  • Knows the spoken commands The agent first checks that common driving phrases and commands are known; the DMV's sheet lists them, from starting the car to switching the lights on. Count each one not understood.
  • Parking brake, set and off Listed in the manual between the defroster and the headlights. A mark for driving off with it applied, or for not locating it.
  • Seat, mirror, wheel and belt Preparing to drive: seat, mirror and seatbelt on the DMV page, and the manual adds the steering wheel. Count each left unadjusted.
  • Wipers and washers First of the vehicle equipment the manual says you operate (p. 8). Count each control not found.

On the drive: DMV page and the DMV's commands sheet 12

  • Backing into a parking space The other parking command on the sheet. Count each error seen in it.
  • Emergency vehicles Response to an emergency vehicle is the page's second example of interaction. Count a wrong or missing response.
  • Giving way to other motorists The page's example of interaction with other motorists is yielding the right-of-way. Count each time it was not given.
  • K turn or 3-point turn The commands sheet gives the maneuver both names. Count each error seen.
  • Other maneuvers asked for The page and the manual both end with other maneuvers as the agent or inspector directs. Count errors in anything else that was asked.
  • Plain backing up Backing up is named apart from parking on the DMV page. Count each error while reversing.
  • Pulling into a parking space One of two parking commands on the DMV's sheet. Count each error seen in it.
  • Road markings Response to the markings painted on the road. Count each one crossed or missed.
  • Signaling each move Signaling is its own item on the DMV page. Count each move made with no signal.
  • Traffic control signs How traffic control signs are obeyed, and in the manual signals too. Count each one answered late or not at all.
  • Turn right, turn left Turns are the page's first example of basic driving skills, and both are commands on the DMV's sheet. Count each poor turn.
  • Whole-drive count Commands, equipment and driving rows summed, one column a drive. A smaller figure is a cleaner drive; the sources give none to compare it with.

Scoring key 10

  • Anything else defective The page's list of safety reasons ends with any other defective equipment.
  • No score in print None of the three texts read gives a number to pass, so the total here stands alone.
  • Quarter of an hour early Come this much ahead of the booked time, the department's road test page says.
  • Rented vehicle Cannot be used by someone who does not hold a valid driver's license: DMV page and manual p. 7.
  • Something on the list missing Without the required items the test must be rescheduled: DMV page.
  • Three checks before the road The page puts the commands, the vehicle's condition and preparing to drive ahead of the road test itself.
  • Two weeks before a new test After a fail the page says to reschedule online within 72 hours; the new test is at least two weeks after the first.
  • Unofficial practice sheet Not a Connecticut DMV form. Rows restate what the department's own page, commands sheet and manual name; how to mark them is our reading.
  • Vehicle found unsafe The road test is not conducted and has to be rescheduled: DMV page.
  • Who drives there A driver without a license cannot drive to the test unless a licensed driver comes along: DMV page.

How this list was compiled: From three texts read on 2026-10-04. (1) The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles' own page, Taking the road test, where a test is scheduled with the department, not here: https://portal.ct.gov/dmv/licenses-permits-ids/take-road-test. (2) The DMV's one-page sheet Common Phrases/Commands Used During DMV Road Skills Test: https://portal.ct.gov/dmv/-/media/dmv/dmv-pdfs/roadtestcommoncommandspdf.pdf. (3) State of Connecticut Driver's Manual, revised March 2023, pages 7 and 8, The Road Test; no copyright line was found in it: https://portal.ct.gov/dmv/-/media/dmv/dmv-pdfs/drivers-manual-english.pdf. Taken from them, each in our own words and in an order of our own: what the page says to bring; the page's common safety reasons a vehicle cannot be used; what the page and the manual say is evaluated before and during the drive; the maneuvers the commands sheet names; what the page says happens after a failed test. The statute behind the test was not read, so nothing here rests on it. Ours, not the state's: the layout, the row names, typing 1 for a line that is ready, and what counts as one mark on the drive. None of the three prints a point value or a pass line, so these sheets print none. This is not a DMV form and cannot be handed in as one; nobody at the department has seen it. Licence: own work

How it works

An unofficial CT drivers test checklist and practice sheet, built from the Connecticut DMV's road test page and Driver's Manual, read October 4, 2026. It is not a state form, and nothing is booked on this page.

Papers and car, then the drive

1. Press Print blank sheet with Car and papers showing. Pick The drive and print that one too.

2. Ahead of the test, go down the first sheet and type 1 for each paper you have and each car line in order.

3. On a practice drive, the supervising driver your permit requires calls the maneuvers, marks the paper only at stops, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

4. Parked, type the count for each row; the sheet totals the drive.

5. Open the next drive with whichever row filled up most.

Questions and answers

What do you need for the CT DMV road test?

The DMV page lists the appointment confirmation page, a completed Form R-229, the learner's permit, a registered and insured vehicle with its registration certificate and Connecticut insurance card, and the driver education certificate. Under 18, a qualified trainer must be present.

Road test CT: what is evaluated?

Before the drive, the agent checks that you know common commands, the vehicle's condition, and how you prepare to drive. On the road, the DMV page lists signs, signaling and road markings, other motorists, emergency vehicles, turns, backing up and parking.

What stops a Connecticut road test before it starts?

An unsafe vehicle. The DMV page's common reasons are cracked or damaged glass, a defective brake or signal light, a lit safety warning on the dashboard, worn tires, missing lug nuts, and defective seatbelts, speedometer or brakes. A missing required item also means rescheduling.

Is there a passing score on the road test?

None is printed. The DMV's road test page, its commands sheet and the Driver's Manual give no point value or pass line, so these sheets count what happened and draw no line. What counts as one mark is our own reading.

What happens if you fail the road test in CT?

The DMV page says to go online within 72 hours to reschedule, that the new test is at least two weeks after the first, and that the testing fee, $40 when read on October 4, 2026, is paid again.
