How it works

Twenty-five questions, 20 right: that is the knowledge test the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles describes. This unofficial Connecticut permit practice test pulls 326 questions out of Title 14 of the General Statutes, links each to its section, and adds 48 on road signs. Expect local detail, such as the $200 first fine for a hand-held phone.

An appointment, a vision check, then the screen

The DMV tests in person only, by appointment at select offices, and the vision test comes first in the same visit. Since January 1, 2026 each applicant also hands over a Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course certificate. Fail and you wait seven days and pay $40 to rebook, so CT driving test practice at home is the cheaper place to get things wrong.

Two topics the legislature wrote onto the test

Section 14-36 orders the class D knowledge test to carry a question on highway work zone safety and at least one on distracted driving. Both are covered here: section 14-212d for work zones, and section 14-296aa for phones, with fines of $200, $375 and $625. The CT permit test questions on this page each show a section number, so you can open the rule itself.

  • Connecticut permit test practice should take in the teen rules: a 16- or 17-year-old holds the youth permit for 180 days, or 120 with a drivers' school or high school course (section 14-36).
  • From October 1, 2026, section 14-230a bars ordinary traffic from the extreme left lane of a divided limited access highway with more than two lanes each way, except to pass and in five other cases.
  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the Connecticut permit test, and how many can you miss?

Twenty-five, and you can miss 5: 20 correct pass, says the Connecticut DMV's knowledge and vision test page, checked in September 2026. The DMV bases the test on its driver's manuals.

Can the CT DMV test be taken online?

No. The DMV says all testing is done in person. Bring identification, a completed Form R-229, the $40 license exam fee, glasses or contact lenses if you need them, and the Work Zone Safety Course completion certificate.

Who may sit beside a Connecticut permit holder?

Section 14-36 allows a licensed driving instructor, or a person aged 20 or older licensed for at least four years with no suspension in that time. With a parent teaching, the only extra passengers allowed are the permit holder's parents or legal guardian.
