The car before the test: Wis. Admin. Code Trans 104.05(3) 15

  • Brake defect (3)(i): the brakes, other than the parking brake, are defective, inoperable or missing.
  • Brake light out Trans 104.05(3)(a): a brake light on either side of the car is not working. Type 1 if you find it.
  • Conditions found The fourteen rows added for each check. Under Trans 104.05(3) the examiner may not conduct the test when the car shows one or more of them.
  • Door will not work (3)(e): the driver or passenger door is inoperable. Try both from inside and outside.
  • Exhaust defective or missing (3)(c): the exhaust system. Type 1 if it is defective or missing.
  • Headlamp or tail lamp defect (3)(j): counts when the lamps are required for visibility or driving conditions during the test.
  • Horn defect (3)(h): the horn is defective, inoperable or missing. Sound it once.
  • No fixed front seat (3)(m): the car lacks a permanently attached front seat for the examiner.
  • Required mirror defect (3)(f): a required inside or outside mirror is defective or missing.

Skills examined: Trans 104.06(6) and (9) 14

  • At intersections (6)(a)2: operation at intersections. Count each one handled wrongly.
  • Backing skills Trans 104.06(9)(a), named for every Class D test. Count each reverse that went wrong.
  • Control of the car (6)(a)5: the operator's ability to control the vehicle. Count each loss of control.
  • Coping with the driving task (6)(a)8. Count each time the learner could not keep up with what the road asked.
  • Driver's attention (6)(a)4: the operator's attention. Count each lapse you saw.
  • Errors counted on the drive The thirteen rows above added for each drive, one mark an error. It is a count of errors, not the state's points: the rule awards points for skills completed and prints no values.
  • Obeying rules of the road (6)(a)6. Count each rule of the road that was not obeyed.
  • Parking skills (9)(c). Count each park that went wrong.
  • Quick stop (6)(b): any skills test may include stopping the vehicle quickly. Count each poor stop, and leave the row empty if you did not try one.
  • Roadside stop and start (6)(a)3: the rule's words are roadside stop and start. Count each try that went wrong.
  • Safe driving practices (6)(a)9: following safe driving practices. Count each one left out.
  • Turnabout, Y turn or U turn (9)(b): the rule names all three. Count each try that went wrong.
  • Turns, right and left Trans 104.06(6)(a)1: right and left turn skills. Count each turn that went wrong.
  • Urban driving (6)(a)7. Count each error in town traffic that fits no row above.

Dangerous driving that fails a test: Trans 104.06(13) 6

  • Accident or contact Trans 104.06(13)(a): an accident the applicant could have prevented, or contact with a fixed object or pedestrian. Minor bumper to bumper contact while parking is excepted.
  • Dangerous driving The five rows added. Any one fails a real test regardless of points earned, under Trans 104.06(13), so the number stays out of the error count.
  • Did not drive attentively (13)(d), in the rule's own words.
  • Inordinate lack of ability (13)(e): in ordinary and reasonable vehicle control, in coping with the driving task or conditions, or in safe driving practices.
  • Moving traffic violation (13)(c): commits a moving traffic violation.
  • Someone reacted, or a warning (13)(b): a dangerous act that makes another person take defensive action, or makes the examiner warn the driver. On a practice drive the warning is yours.

Taken from the rule, each in our own words: the fourteen vehicle conditions of 104.05(3)(a) to (n); the inspection, safety belt and registration lines of 104.05(1) and (2); the nine skills of 104.06(6)(a), the quick stop of (6)(b) and the three Class D skills of (9); the five kinds of dangerous driving of 104.06(13); the scoring lines of 104.08; the waiting periods of 104.09; and 104.06(12) on who may ride along. Left out: the moped, motorcycle and commercial vehicle items (104.05(2)(c), (e) and (f), (3)(o), (4) and (5); 104.06(7), (8) and (10)), the motorcycle and special-vehicle exceptions inside (3)(b) and (3)(g), and 104.05(2)(b) and (g). Nothing comes from the Motorists' Handbook, from the examiner's forms that a note to 104.06 names, or from any agency web page. Our own work: the wording of every line, and what to count as an error in each row, which the rule does not define. These are unofficial practice sheets and not the state's form. They print no value for a single error and no pass line, because the rule prints neither. Licence: own work

How it works

This unofficial Wisconsin road test study guide is two practice sheets that follow Wis. Admin. Code Trans 104.05 and 104.06, not the state's form: the car conditions that stop a test, then the skills examined. Rule read October 2, 2026.

Check the car, then score the drive

1. Choose The car and press Print blank sheet, then do the same for The drive.

2. Parked, walk around the car the learner will test in and type 1 beside each condition you find. One stops a real test.

3. On the drive, the supervising driver your permit requires marks errors on paper at stops, and speaks up or takes over the moment it is needed.

4. Parked again, type each row's count. Skill errors add up; dangerous driving has its own total.

5. Start the next drive with the row that had the most marks.

  • Headlamps and tail lamps count only when visibility or driving conditions need them; wipers and defroster, when weather does.
  • The rule names a turnabout, a Y turn or a U turn in one line.

Questions and answers

How many points do you need to pass the Wisconsin road test?

The rule prints no number. Trans 104.08 says points are awarded for skills completed and that the passing score is the accumulated point total for the class tested. So these sheets count errors and draw no pass line.

What is an automatic fail on the Wisconsin road test?

Trans 104.06(13) fails a test regardless of points for a preventable accident or contact with a fixed object or pedestrian, a dangerous act that makes someone react or the examiner warn the driver, a moving traffic violation, inattentive driving, or an inordinate lack of ability.

How long do you wait after failing the Wisconsin road test?

At least one day under Trans 104.09, counting the day of the test. The wait is one week after failing by 10 points or less, and two weeks after failing by more than 10. After five fails in a year the department must give permission.

What stops a Wisconsin road test before it starts?

Under Trans 104.05 the examiner inspects the car first. No test is given when the car shows a listed condition such as a brake light out, when the applicant refuses the safety belt, or when the car is unregistered with no renewal applied for.

Is this the Wisconsin DMV road test study guide?

No. These are our own unofficial sheets, not the state's handbook or the examiner's form. The department gives the skills test under Trans 104.06(2). The rows come from chapter Trans 104, reworded by us, and what an error is in a row is our reading.
