How this list was compiled: Written from Wisconsin Statutes chapter 140, Notaries Public; Notarial Acts, as published by the Wisconsin Legislature at https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/140 (the text updated through 2025 Wisconsin Act 247 and published October 1, 2026), read 2026-10-03. Each question links to its section page in the form https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/140/02. The exam fact (a score of 90 percent or better within one year of applying) and the renewal steps come from the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions: https://dfi.wi.gov/Pages/ConsumerServices/NotaryPublic/GeneralInformation.aspx and https://dfi.wi.gov/Pages/ConsumerServices/NotaryPublic/NotaryFAQ.aspx, read 2026-10-03. The state asks for 90 percent

The Department of Financial Institutions has four-year applicants pass its notary exam, at 90% or higher, in the year before applying, and print the certificate. Its FAQ sends renewing notaries through the tutorial exam again. Exam mode here passes at 90 percent.

What section 140.02 adds to the uniform act

Most of chapter 140 is the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts. Section 140.02 is Wisconsin's own: a permanent commission for attorneys, a fee cap per document, and a ban on paid immigration help by non-attorneys. The Start from menu drills each part.

  • A $20 application fee, a $500 bond from a surety company and a four-year term, all in section 140.02(1).
  • No more than $5 per document for an acknowledgment, under section 140.02(9)(e).
  • The stamp carries your name, "Notary Public" and "State of Wisconsin" (140.17); the expiration date is optional.

Questions and answers

What score do you need on the Wisconsin notary exam?

90 percent or better, within one year of applying, says the Department of Financial Institutions' general information page, read October 3, 2026. It publishes no question count, so exam mode draws a 25-question sample. A pass on it measures this bank, not the state's exam.

Are these the real Wisconsin notary exam questions?

No. Nobody here has seen the Department of Financial Institutions' tutorial exam, and the site is not affiliated with it. All but two questions were written from chapter 140; two come from the department's page. No commissioned Wisconsin notary has reviewed the answers yet.

How long does a Wisconsin notary commission last?

Four years for an applicant who is not an attorney, under section 140.02(1)(f). An attorney licensed in Wisconsin is entitled to a permanent commission under section 140.02(2)(a), for a $50 fee.

Does a Wisconsin notary have to keep a journal?

Chapter 140 contains no journal requirement. For an act done for a remotely located individual, section 140.145 requires an audio-visual recording, kept at least 7 years unless a rule sets another period, and notice to the department before the first such act.
