How this list was compiled: Written from the New Jersey Law on Notarial Acts, N.J.S.A. 52:7-10 to 52:7-19 and 52:7-10.1 to 52:7-10.20, with R.S. 46:14-2.1, R.S. 46:14-6.1 and N.J.S. 22A:4-14, as printed in Public Law 2021, chapter 179 on the New Jersey Legislature's site, https://pub.njleg.gov/Bills/2020/PL21/179_.HTM, read 2026-10-03. This is the text as enacted in 2021; every question links to that page. The Legislature's current statutes text, https://pub.njleg.gov/statutes/STATUTES-TEXT.zip (file of October 3, 2026), read 2026-10-04, shows no later amendment to any section a question cites. The steps for a new applicant and the rule that an active notary who renews takes no exam come from the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services' Notary Public Application page, https://www.njportal.com/DOR/Notary/, read 2026-10-03. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the text of the law and the Division's application page; nothing is copied from another practice test, from the state's Notary Public Manual or from its training videos. Short quotations from the law are marked.
How it works
This unofficial NJ notary exam practice test holds 89 questions: 87 from New Jersey's 2021 notary law (P.L.2021, c.179) as enacted, and two from the state's notary application page. Each answer names its source. Checked October 3, 2026.

Who takes the New Jersey exam
A non-attorney applying for a first commission completes a course of study and passes the State Treasurer's examination (N.J.S.A. 52:7-12). The Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services says an active notary who renews takes no exam; more than 30 days after expiration, you count as new.
What New Jersey adds to the uniform act
A legislator endorses the application, the oath is taken before the county clerk within three months, and one journal covers every act. The Start from menu keeps these under Commission, course and oath and under Stamp, journal and limits.
A five-year term and a nonrefundable $25 fee for each commission or renewal (N.J.S.A. 52:7-11).
One journal at a time, kept 10 years after its last entry; a paper journal is a bound register with numbered lines and pages.
The stamp carries your name, "Notary Public, State of New Jersey" and the commission expiration date, and belongs to you, not your employer.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the NJ notary exam?
The Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services' application page, read October 3, 2026, publishes no question count or pass mark, so this page uses neither. Exam mode draws a 25-question sample of this bank; a score here measures the bank, not the state's exam.
Are these the real NJ notary exam questions?
No. This site has not seen the State Treasurer's examination and is independent of the Department of the Treasury. The questions come from the 2021 law's text and, for two, the Division's application page. No commissioned New Jersey notary has reviewed the answers yet.
Does a New Jersey notary need a journal?
Yes. N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.18 requires a journal of all notarial acts, with the date and time, the type of act, each person's name and address, how identity was shown and the fees. Attorneys and title insurance staff may keep their regular files instead.
Can a New Jersey notary notarize by video?
Yes. N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10 lets a notarial officer located in New Jersey act for a remotely located individual by communication technology, after notifying the State Treasurer. The audio-visual recording is kept at least 10 years unless a rule sets another period.
