What the Colorado notary exam tests
The Secretary of State's Notary Public Examination page says the exam tests familiarity with Colorado notary law and the procedures and guidelines of the required training. C.R.S. 24-21-522 bases it on a course in the laws, rules, procedures and ethics of notarial acts. These questions cover the statute only.
A Colorado notary study guide by topic
Seven topics follow the statute. The ones that are Colorado's own: a rectangular stamp and no embosser (24-21-517), a journal for every act (24-21-519), an electronic journal for remote acts, and interpreters (24-21-514.7).
A person whose commission is revoked under part 5 may not apply for another (C.R.S. 24-21-523).
Thirty days to report a lost or stolen journal or stamping device, or a change of name or address (24-21-518, 24-21-519, 24-21-530).
The term is four years. Identification may have expired no more than one year before the act (24-21-521, 24-21-507).
Questions and answers
Is the Colorado notary exam open book?
Yes. The Secretary of State's examination page, read October 13, 2026, calls it an open book test, taken online, that should take about 30 minutes. Notes and the handbook may be used. Its FAQ says the online training and examination are free.
Are these the real Colorado notary test questions?
No. This site has never seen the state's examination and is not affiliated with the Colorado Secretary of State. Every question was written from C.R.S. Title 24, article 21, part 5. No commissioned Colorado notary has reviewed the answers yet.
What score passes the Colorado notary exam?
The Secretary of State's examination page prints no pass mark and no question count, so this page gives none. A 25-question sample here covers the statute; a good score shows you know the law, not how the state scores.
Who has to take the Colorado notary exam?
C.R.S. 24-21-522 requires it of an applicant who does not hold a Colorado commission. The Secretary of State's applying and renewing FAQ, read October 13, 2026, says new and renewing notaries alike must attend approved training and take the online examination.
How much can a Colorado notary charge?
No more than $15 for each document attested before the notary, a fee that covers every duty needed to complete the act, or up to $25 for the notary's electronic signature in place of that fee (C.R.S. 24-21-529).
