How this list was compiled: Written from the New York Department of State's "Notary Public License Law" booklet (September 2026 revision), https://dos.ny.gov/notary-public-license-law-0, checked 2026-09-19. The statute questions were read again on the New York State Senate site, https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/, on 2026-09-18: Executive Law 130 to 138, 140 and 142-a; Real Property Law 290 to 333; Judiciary Law 484, 485 and 750; Public Officers Law 10, 67 and 69; Penal Law 70.00, 170.10, 175.40 and 195.00; Banking Law 335; County Law 534; Domestic Relations Law 11; CPLR 2309 and 3113. 19 NYCRR Part 182 was read in the booklet, where the Department prints the full rule. The questions in the "Definitions and general terms" group were written from the booklet's own "Definitions and General Terms" and "Professional Conduct" sections, because the Department names general terms as an exam topic; each of them cites the booklet, not a statute. Exam facts on the page come from two Department of State documents, both PDFs, checked 2026-09-19: "Notary Public Walk-In Written Examination Information and Schedule, July to December 2026", https://dos.ny.gov/july-december-2026-notary-written-exam-info-and-schedule, and "New York City September - November 2026 Notary Public Examination Instructions and Schedule", https://dos.ny.gov/new-york-city-september-november-2026-notary-written-exam-info-and-scheduling-instructions. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text, the regulation text and the Department of State's booklet; nothing is copied from another practice test. Short quotations from the statutes and the booklet are marked with quotation marks.

What New York publishes about the exam
The Department of State's exam schedules for late 2026 say the exam is multiple choice, allows 1 hour and costs $15. They list the topics as license law, general terms and a notary's duties and functions, as outlined in the booklet. Results come by mail as passed or failed, with no score.
Using this as an NYS notary exam study guide
The state's own study guide is the License Law booklet, and the Start from menu follows it in eight topics, from appointment and fees to electronic notarization and penalties. Because the state lists general terms as a topic, 32 questions come from the booklet's definitions, such as jurat, affiant, venue and laches. Misses stay under Missed, and Clear my progress erases them.
Learn the fees as a set: $2 for an oath or an acknowledgment, $60 to apply, $15 per exam, $10 for a change or duplicate card, $25 per electronic act.
The commission term is 4 years (Executive Law 130), and Executive Law 130 and 131 ask for no bond.
Outside New York City the exam is walk-in. For September to November 2026, New York City candidates must book by emailing exams@dos.ny.gov. Unscheduled arrivals are turned away.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the NYS notary exam, and what score passes?
The Department of State publishes neither number. Its schedules say only that the exam is multiple choice, lasts 1 hour and is marked passed or failed, and that a pass stays valid for two years. So Exam mode here borrows only the hour. It sets no pass mark, and its 25-question set is a practice size, not the state's.
Are these the real exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the Department of State's exam and is not affiliated with it. Statute questions link to the section on the State Senate's site. The rest link to the booklet. No commissioned New York notary has reviewed the answers yet, so the linked source has the final word.
Does a New York notary need a seal or a journal?
No, the law lists no seal, but it does require records. Executive Law section 137 lists what goes beneath the signature in black ink: the name, the words Notary Public State of New York, the county of qualification and the expiration date. 19 NYCRR 182.9 calls for a record of each act, kept at least ten years.
