A six-hour course, then 80% by statute
G.S. 10B-8 requires a classroom course of at least six hours within the three months before applying, then a written examination on notarial laws, procedures and ethics. The Department's reappointment page puts the renewal exam online with 3 chances within 30 days.
Seven topics from Chapter 10B
The bank covers the commission and oath, fees, signature and seal, certificates, identity and records, electronic and remote notarization, and penalties. Pick one in the Start from menu. Misses are kept under Missed, and Clear my progress erases them. Emergency video notarization is left out: on 18 September 2026 the statute text and the Department's notice gave different end dates.
G.S. 10B-31 fee caps: $10 per principal signature for an acknowledgment, jurat or proof, $10 per person for an oath, and $25 per signature for a remote act once a platform is licensed.
Deadlines: 45 days to take the oath before the register of deeds, 10 days to report a lost or stolen seal, 45 days to report a new address.
A seal is required, round from 1 1/2 to 2 inches or rectangular up to 1 by 2 1/2 inches (G.S. 10B-37). A paper journal is optional (10B-38), Chapter 10B sets no bond, and the term is five years (10B-9).
Questions and answers
What score passes the NC notary exam, and what does 80% here show?
G.S. 10B-8(a) says an applicant must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly, and the Department gives the same figure for the reappointment exam. The state gives no question count, so passing here means 20 of a 25-question sample written from the statutes. It predicts nothing about the state's exam.
Do the questions come from the state's exam or its manual?
Neither. This site has never seen the Department's examination, is not affiliated with it, and took nothing from the North Carolina Notary Public Manual, which the reappointment page says you must own. No commissioned North Carolina notary has reviewed the answers yet, so the linked statute is the final word.
Is remote electronic notarization in use in North Carolina yet?
Not under Part 4A. A remote electronic act needs a platform licensed by the Secretary (G.S. 10B-134.19), and on 19 September 2026 the Department's pages listed none. Its notice said emergency video notarization is extended to 1 July 2027 or until the first license is issued. The remote questions here test law on the books.
