How it works
Seventy-one unofficial questions for the F-02, Fire Guard for Shelter (Citywide). The facts are those of the New York City Fire Department's study booklet in its July 2026 revision, opened on October 5, 2026; the section follows each explanation.

Six topics from the booklet
The Start from menu drills one part at a time: the exam and the certificate, responsibilities and staffing, patrols, doors and records, causes of fire and common problems, reporting an emergency, alarm devices, voice systems and tents.
Exam mode follows the notice
For a timed run, exam mode deals 25 questions against a 38-minute clock and marks 70 percent as a pass, the figures printed in the F-02 notice. What the department asks on the day is its own material.
- Shelters are patrolled at least once every hour whether or not any system is out of service (section 4.1).
- The recommended minimum for a fire watch is one fire guard for every 250 occupants (section 4.2).
- An F-02 holder may perform F-01 duties in shelters only; outside shelters the F-01 is its own certificate.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the F-02 test and how long is it?
By the booklet as revised in July 2026: 25 multiple-choice questions, 38 minutes and a passing mark of at least 70 percent, on a touch-screen computer. The department's own page shows whether a newer revision exists.
Are these the real F-02 exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the department's exam and is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. They are original questions built on the July 2026 booklet, whose own samples are not repeated here. No certificate holder has reviewed them yet.
Who must have an F-02 certificate?
The booklet says buildings operating as emergency shelters always need fire guards on site. The F-02 qualifies its holder for the hourly shelter patrols and for fire watch when a system is out of service.
Is the F-02 the same as the F-01?
No. Both are citywide fire guard certificates. The booklet says an F-02 holder can perform F-01 duties in shelters only and needs no separate F-01 there, and that the hourly shelter patrols belong to the F-02.
