How it works
Here is an unofficial F-01 practice test: 78 questions on the impairment fire watch, built from the New York City Fire Department's study booklet for the Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment as revised in January 2026. Sections are named throughout; last read October 5, 2026.

Seven topics from the booklet
The Start from menu drills one part at a time: the exam and the certificate, when a fire watch is required, orientation and risk, patrols and what to check, records and notifying the department, fire emergencies and pull stations, sprinklers, standpipes and alarms.
Exam mode follows the notice
Exam mode copies the F-01 notice in size only: 20 questions, a 30-minute limit and a pass at 70 percent. The department writes its own questions, and they are not these.
- A trained person the owner designates may cover only the first 4 hours; after that the patrols need F-01 holders.
- One fire guard patrols at most 50,000 square feet, and every affected area at least once every hour.
- The inspection record stays on the premises at least 3 years and is signed by the fire guard (section 1.3).
Questions and answers
How is the F-01 exam set up?
The January 2026 notice gives 20 multiple-choice questions, taken on a touch-screen computer in 30 minutes, with a pass at 70 percent or above. Look at the department's posted notice for any change made after that revision.
Are these the real F-01 exam questions?
No. This site has never seen the department's exam and is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. Their facts come from the public F-01 booklet, reworded, and none of its sample questions is reused. No certificate holder has reviewed them yet.
When is an F-01 fire guard required?
Where a required fire protection system is not working, the booklet calls for a fire watch, and the F-01 is the certificate for the fire guard who keeps it. It is citywide, so the holder may work at different buildings.
Is this F01 practice test free?
Yes. Every question, explanation and exam-mode round on this page is free to use, and your answers stay in your browser. The department's own study booklet is also provided to the public for free on its website.
