How this list was compiled: Written from the study material the New York City Fire Department publishes for the C-92 Certificate of Fitness, Supervision of Storage, Handling and Use of Flammable or Combustible Liquids, revised March 2024 and read 2026-10-12 (https://www.nyc.gov/assets/fdny/downloads/pdf/business/cof-c92-noe-study-materials.pdf): the notice of examination, the introduction, Part I (sections 1 to 7: definitions, storage, handling and use, labeling and signs, fire protection, dry cleaning, common liquids) and Part II (sections 8 to 10: new or modified installations, with Tables 8-1 to 10-2). Each question names the section or table it rests on. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the facts in the booklet and restate them in new words; no sample question, table or passage is copied. The booklet itself is copyright the City of New York.

How it works

This unofficial C-92 FDNY practice test has 214 questions on supervising the storage, handling and use of flammable and combustible liquids. They were written from the New York City Fire Department's study material, revised March 2024 and still posted on October 12, 2026.

Ten topics, in the booklet's order

The questions run from the exam notice and the supervision amounts through permits, the six liquid classes, containers and cabinets, tanks, transfer and hand rub dispensers, signs and extinguishers, dry cleaning and the common liquids, to Part II for installations approved since July 1, 2008. Container and cabinet storage is the largest group.

Part II is mostly table readings

Most Part II questions here name a table, from 8-1 to 10-2, and ask for one figure in it: a gallon limit, a pile height, a distance to a lot line.

  • Class I liquids are barred below grade. Class II and III may be stored in a cellar that is sprinklered throughout (section 2.1.1).
  • One storage cabinet holds at most 120 gallons, and one fire area at most three cabinets (section 2.1.3).
  • A tank stops at 95 percent full, and the gallons needed to reach 90 percent are worked out before filling (section 2.4.3).

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the C-92 exam?

Fifty multiple-choice questions on a touch screen computer, with 76 minutes allowed and 70 percent needed to pass, by the booklet revised March 2024. A newer booklet, if the department posts one, replaces these numbers.

Are these the real C-92 exam questions?

No. This site has never seen the department's exam and is not affiliated with the New York City Fire Department. Every question is new writing based on the C-92 booklet, and its sample questions are not used. No certificate holder has reviewed them yet.

Who needs a C-92 certificate of fitness?

Whoever supervises the storage, handling or use of flammable or combustible liquids at one premises. The booklet asks for personal supervision of handling and use, and general supervision of storage above set amounts, such as 2.5 gallons of gasoline.

Is the C-92 test open book?

Only in part. The notice says the tables printed in the booklet are given out as reference material at the exam, and the booklet itself is not.

Does the C-92 cover construction sites?

No. The C-92 belongs to one premises, and the notice sends applicants who work on construction sites to the S-93 exam. Someone who passes the C-92 may add the S-94 or the C-93 for a further $25 without another exam.
