What Class C means in Illinois

Under 92 Ill. Adm. Code 1030.30, Class C covers any vehicle with a GVWR of 16,001 pounds or more but less than 26,001, alone or towing a vehicle rated 10,000 pounds or less. Holders may also drive Class D vehicles, not motorcycles.

What this non CDL Class C practice test asks

Eight topics: license classes, vehicle definitions, size and weight, loads, equipment, towing, safety tests and the rules of the road that name trucks. It shares no question with our Illinois permit or CDL general knowledge banks.

Exam mode and the Missed pile

Exam mode draws 30 mixed questions with no clock and no pass mark. The count is this site's, not the state's. Missed keeps every question you got wrong until you answer it right.

  • Chapter 15 size limits for one truck: 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches high, 42 feet long.
  • Property-carrying vehicles registered for 10,001 to 26,000 pounds: safety test at least every 12 months under 625 ILCS 5/13-109.
  • A second division vehicle over 8,000 pounds carries at least 3 flares, lanterns or reflectors outside an urban district (12-702).

Questions and answers

Is this the Illinois Class C license test?

No. The Illinois Secretary of State gives the written test, and this is an unofficial practice bank. Its questions come from the Illinois Vehicle Code and 92 Ill. Adm. Code 1030.30, and nothing is copied from the state's study booklet.

How many questions are on the non CDL Class C license test?

This page does not say yet. The question count, pass mark and fee belong to the Illinois Secretary of State, and none is shown here until it has been copied from the agency's own page with the date.

Is a Class C non CDL practice test enough for every Class C vehicle?

No. Under 625 ILCS 5/6-500, a vehicle used in commerce that is designed for 16 or more people, driver included, or that hauls hazardous materials, is a commercial motor vehicle whatever it weighs. Section 6-507 forbids driving one without a CDL.

Is there an Illinois Class B non CDL practice test?

Not as a separate bank. This page launches with Class C alone. Class B starts at a GVWR of 26,001 pounds under 1030.30, and the size, weight, load and equipment sections cited here are written for vehicles, not license classes.

Do I need a Class C license to rent a moving truck in Illinois?

Not always. 92 Ill. Adm. Code 1030.30 lets a Class D holder drive a rental vehicle up to 26,000 pounds to move their own or an immediate family member's property within Illinois, not for business, after completing a safety course on the vehicle.
