How it works

This unofficial general knowledge CDL practice test has 222 questions from 49 CFR Parts 382, 383, 391 to 393, 395 and 396, checked 3 October 2026. Shifting, backing and skid control are in state manuals, not here.

What this CDL permit practice test covers

Area 1 of the 20 knowledge areas in 49 CFR 383.111(a) is the safe operations regulations. This bank drills it in ten topics, among them CDL and permit rules (46 questions), vehicle inspection (31), hours of service (27) and cargo securement (20).

Rounds of ten, then a 30 question exam

Practice runs in rounds of ten. The Start from menu under the question picks one topic, and after a round More options holds your Missed questions. Exam mode asks 30 questions, marks nothing until you finish and passes at 24 right, the federal 80 percent. A pass covers the rules only.

  • Hours of service and disqualifications are mostly numbers: 11 and 14 hours, 60 and 120 days.
  • Open the source link under an explanation. Several sections changed in 2026, including the stopped-vehicle rule in 392.22.
  • Print follows each round, and a tick on With answer key adds the answers.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the general knowledge CDL test?

The CFR gives no number. 49 CFR 383.133 says each test must contain a set number of questions, and 383.135 puts the pass mark at 80 percent. Your state licensing agency's CDL page has its count. Exam mode's 30 is a practice length.

Is there a CDL general knowledge test answers PDF?

Not here, and a list would help little. Under 49 CFR 383.133 a quarter of each new test version is new questions and the three responses change order, so memorized CDL general knowledge test answers go stale. Print, on the score card, puts this bank's questions on paper.

Can I use this as a California CDL practice test, general knowledge section?

For the federal rules, yes. 49 CFR 383.110 has every state test the knowledge listed in Part 383, so the hours of service, inspection and cargo rules are the same. State-only rules and all driving technique come from California's own commercial driver handbook.
