How it works
Pilot car practice test questions for escort vehicle operators, written from the Federal Highway Administration's training manual. It is unofficial, it is not a certification course, and no state's own test question is in it.

Practice, not certification
This page is not a pilot/escort course and gives no certificate. The manual says each State sets its own escort rules, and no State's rule is asked here. Exam mode draws 25 questions; that length is this site's choice.
Seven topics
The Start from menu under the question sets one: industry background, escort vehicle equipment, route surveys, pre-trip planning, load movement, traffic control and railroad crossings, or after the trip and driver safety.
Where each answer comes from
Every explanation names its module and lesson of the Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operators Training Manual (FHWA-HOP-16-050, February 2017), read on October 4, 2026 at ops.fhwa.dot.gov. Each question asks what the manual says; the explanation restates it in our own words.
- Wrong answers go to Missed until you answer them right.
- Print, on the score card, makes a question sheet, and a tick adds an answer key that names each module and lesson.
Questions and answers
Is this a pilot car certification practice test?
It is unofficial practice on the federal training manual, not any state's certification test. The manual, published in 2017, says no formal national certification process exists and that about 12 of the 50 States then required escorts to be certified.
Is the pilot car practice test free?
Yes. Every question, explanation and print sheet on this page is free, and your answers stay on your device.
What does P/EVO mean?
Pilot/escort vehicle operator: the driver of an escort vehicle that travels with an oversize load. The manual's first reason for escorts is to let drivers coming toward a large load know it is there.
How long is the exam in the manual's own course?
The manual describes a 40-question multiple choice exam at the end of its course, and says States typically ask for at least 75 percent, some 80. A State that certifies escorts sets its own test; none is copied here.
What does the FHWA pilot car manual cover?
Eight modules: industry background, operator and equipment requirements, route planning, pre-trip activities, trip operations, post-trip tasks, driver safety, and the course exam. The questions here come from the first seven.
