How this list was compiled: Our own questions, written to the seven subject groups of the federal nurse aide course, 42 CFR 483.152(b) (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-42/section-483.152), which every state's written or oral examination must address under 42 CFR 483.154(b)(1)(ii) (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-42/section-483.154); both sections read whole on ecfr.gov on 2026-10-07. Each set of 40 holds 10 questions on the subjects taught before resident contact (communication, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, independence), 7 on basic nursing skills, 8 on personal care skills, 3 on mental health and social service needs, 4 on care of cognitively impaired residents, 4 on basic restorative services and 4 on residents' rights. The rule gives no shares; these are this site's own. Every fact was read on 2026-10-07 in the public source the question names: the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia of the National Library of Medicine (medlineplus.gov/ency) and 42 CFR 483.5, 483.10, 483.12 and 483.152 on ecfr.gov. What the CNA exam covers

No single body owns the CNA exam. Under 42 CFR 483.154, read October 7, 2026, each state gives a written or oral examination that addresses the course subjects of 42 CFR 483.152(b), and a skills demonstration. Every set here covers all seven subject groups.

Three sets

Test 1, Test 2 and Test 3 share no question, so this nursing assistant practice test can be taken three times before anything repeats. Exam mode asks a whole set and shows the reasons at the end.

Where the answers come from

Care facts were read in the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia and residents' rights in 42 CFR 483.5, 483.10 and 483.12. Each of these CNA practice questions names its page.

  • These CNA test questions practice the written part only, not the skills demonstration.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the CNA test?

It depends on the state, because the federal rule sets no count. Ohio's knowledge exam, for one, has 79 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, by its candidate handbook of December 2025. Your state's handbook gives yours.

Is this the official CNA certification exam?

No. States give the real exam through their registries and testing companies, Credentia and D&S Diversified Technologies (Headmaster) among them. This site is not affiliated with any of them, and every question here is our own.

Is this a free CNA practice test with answers?

Yes. There is no charge and no sign-up. After each answer the page shows the right choice, a short reason and the public source it was checked against.

How do you pass the CNA exam?

By passing both parts: the written or oral examination and the skills demonstration. Under 42 CFR 483.154 a candidate who does not pass is told which areas were missed and has at least three opportunities.

Do these CNA state exam practice questions fit my state?

They cover the federal subjects that every state's written test must address. A state adds its own rules and exam numbers: the STNA practice test does that for Ohio.
