How it works
This CNA abbreviation quiz for nursing assistants is free, with no account. It is unofficial and not affiliated with any state registry or testing company. A facility keeps its own approved list: use only what your employer allows.

Two kinds of question
In 80 questions the abbreviation is shown and you pick its meaning. In 29 the meaning is shown and you pick the abbreviation, as when you chart. The meaning is written out in full after each answer.
Six topics
Times and orders (PRN, BID, DNR), daily care (ADLs, ROM), intake and diet (I&O, NPO), vital signs and charting (BP, SpO2), conditions and safety (CVA, UTI, MRSA), people and places (RN, DON, SNF).
Where each meaning was checked
Every abbreviation is written out in a public source the question names: MedlinePlus Appendix B from the National Library of Medicine, a MedlinePlus encyclopedia page, the open textbook Nursing Assistant from Open RN, or a federal rule. One that none of them writes out is not asked.
- The wrong expansions are made up for practice. Only the keyed answer is a real meaning.
Questions and answers
Is a CNA abbreviation test part of the state exam?
The federal rule, 42 CFR 483.154, names two parts: a written or oral examination on the nurse aide course subjects and a skills demonstration. It names no separate abbreviation test. Check your own candidate handbook for the words it lists.
Is there a CNA abbreviations practice test to print?
Yes. The same 109 questions print as a paper test, with or without the answer key.
What does PRN mean on a care plan?
PRN means as needed, by MedlinePlus Appendix B. BID is twice a day, TID three times a day and QID four times a day.
What does NPO mean?
NPO means nothing by mouth, by section 6.2 of the open textbook Nursing Assistant from Open RN. On a diet card NAS is no added salt, NT is nectar thick and HT is honey thick.
