The real skills test, as the federal rule describes it

Retakes
At least three chances at the evaluation. A state may cap the number, at three or more.
What it is
Randomly selected tasks, drawn from a pool of the tasks nurse aides generally perform.
Always in the pool
Bathing, grooming with mouth care, dressing, toileting, eating and hydration, feeding, skin care, and transfers, positioning and turning.
Where
In a facility or a laboratory set up like the place where the aide will work.
Who rates it
A registered nurse with at least one year of experience caring for the elderly or the chronically ill.
How many skills
The rule gives no number and no time. Your state's candidate handbook does.
To pass
The skills demonstration and the written or oral examination must both be passed.

Checked October 8, 2026 against 42 CFR 483.154 and 483.152(b)(3). Rules change, so confirm with the agency itself before your test.

How this list was compiled: Our own questions on the skills demonstration that 42 CFR 483.154(b)(2) requires of every state nurse aide evaluation: randomly selected items from a pool that must include all the personal care skills of 42 CFR 483.152(b)(3) (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-42/section-483.154 and section-483.152, read 2026-10-08 in the text current as of 2026-10-02). The eight groups follow 483.152(b) in its order: infection control and safety (b)(1), vital signs, height and weight (b)(2), the personal care skills (b)(3) and assistive devices and range of motion (b)(6). Every step was read on 2026-10-08 in the public source the question names: the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia of the National Library of Medicine (medlineplus.gov/ency) or the procedural guidelines of the Texas Curriculum for Nurse Aides in Long Term Care Facilities, Texas Health and Human Services, September 2026 edition (https://www.hhs.texas.gov/sites/default/files/documents/doing-business-with-hhs/licensing-credentialing-regulation/nurse-aide/cna.pdf), a state health agency's public curriculum. How it works

This free CNA practice skills test asks 70 questions on each skill's order: what comes first, what prevents infection or a fall, what is done last. It is unofficial and not affiliated with any state registry, Credentia, Prometric or Headmaster.

Read the full guide

What the skills test is

Federal rule 42 CFR 483.154, read October 8, 2026, has every state test a demonstration of randomly selected skills from a pool that includes all the personal care skills. These CNA practical test questions follow that list, group by group.

Steps from public pages only

Each step was checked in the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia or in the Texas Curriculum for Nurse Aides in Long Term Care Facilities, a public state document. No testing company's step list was copied.

  • Your state's candidate handbook lists its own skills and steps. Where it differs from a question here, follow the handbook.

Questions and answers

Can you practice the CNA skills test online?

You can practice the order and the safety points online, which is what these questions do. The skills themselves are shown to an evaluator in person, so go through them with a partner too.

What skills are on the CNA clinical skills test?

Each state's handbook has its own list. Under 42 CFR 483.154 the pool must include all the personal care skills: bathing, grooming with mouth care, dressing, toileting, eating and hydration, feeding, skin care, and transfers, positioning and turning.

Who scores the CNA skills exam?

A registered nurse with at least one year of experience caring for the elderly or the chronically ill, under 42 CFR 483.154(c)(4).

Are these the real skills test steps?

No. They are our own questions, checked against MedlinePlus and a public state curriculum. Testing companies publish their own step lists and none was copied here.
