How this list was compiled: Written from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD), 11th Edition, December 2023, published by the Federal Highway Administration at https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno_11th_Edition.htm . Chapters read: Part 1, Chapters 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2G and 2H to 2N, and Parts 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8, as the chapter PDFs under https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/11th_Edition/ . Checked 2026-09-18. Each question names the section, table or figure it was written from, and sign descriptions were compared with the figure pages of the same PDFs. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the MUTCD, a U.S. government publication. Nothing is copied from a state driver manual, a state knowledge test or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial road signs practice test holds 200 questions in ten topic filters, from sign shapes and colors to work zones, railroad crossings, pavement markings and traffic signals. Every question was written from the MUTCD 11th Edition, the federal manual that sets how U.S. road signs look, checked on September 18, 2026. Signs are described in words, and each explanation names its section, table or figure.

Why one road sign practice test works in every state

Section 1B.01 of the MUTCD makes it the national standard for signs, signals and markings on roads open to public travel, and Section 1B.02 says every state has adopted it, some with their own supplements. That is why a STOP sign is a red octagon everywhere, and why one road signs permit test bank can serve a reader in any state. The manual does not set the driving rule behind a sign or the format of a knowledge test. State law does that, so exam mode has no pass mark and no clock.

Road signs and meanings for permit test study, by topic

The topic filter splits the bank ten ways: 10 questions on shapes, 13 on colors, 41 on regulatory signs, 40 on warning signs, 16 on guide and service signs, 9 on school zones, 18 on work zones and flaggers, 16 on railroad crossings, 18 on pavement markings and 19 on traffic signals. For a driving signs practice test on one family, choose it in the Start from menu under the question. Practice and exam rounds then draw from it alone.

Using the page as a DMV signs practice test

A tap marks each answer at once. The right choice turns green, with the reason under it. Next question moves on. Keys 1 to 4 pick too. For a scored round of up to 25 questions, press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Nothing is marked until you press Finish the exam; to stop early, press the progress line, then Finish and mark what I answered. Then you get a score, a table by topic and every miss with the right answer. This is a DMV signs practice test only in that it drills the national sign system your state manual pictures. Our state pages each add a shorter permit practice test signs bank beside the state's own rules. For signs permit test practice in short sessions, choose one topic, then press Missed to retry your wrong answers. Print, on the score card, lists the questions you played, and a tick adds their answer key. Clear my progress wipes your scores and piles from this browser.

  • Permit test signs to know by outline alone: the octagon, the downward-pointing triangle, the pennant, the pentagon, the round railroad advance sign and the crossbuck.
  • Learn color before symbols: red prohibits, yellow warns, orange marks work zones, fluorescent yellow-green marks school signs, blue points to services, brown to recreation and green gives guidance.
  • Read the explanation on every road sign permit test question you miss. The MUTCD chapter PDF it names shows the sign in color.
  • Say the shape, color and legend out loud before you read the choices.
  • The number of signs on permit test forms differs by state, so check your state's driver manual for the count and the pass mark.

Questions and answers

Is this the road signs DMV test my state gives?

No. Your state's driver licensing agency writes and scores its own knowledge test, and this page is not run by any DMV or by the Federal Highway Administration. It is an unofficial bank on the national sign system in the MUTCD, which your state manual pictures.

Does the bank cover all signs for permit test questions?

It covers the sign families a new driver meets: regulatory, warning, guide, school, work zone and railroad signs. The MUTCD holds far more signs than one test could ask about. Your state manual's sign chapter is the list to finish.

Which signs for DMV test day should I learn first?

Start with the signs you need to know for permit test questions in any state: STOP, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER, WRONG WAY, ONE WAY, speed limit signs, the no-passing pennant, school and pedestrian crossings, the round railroad advance sign and the crossbuck.

Why are there no sign pictures?

The quiz on this site shows text only, so each sign is described by its shape, color and legend. To see any sign, open the MUTCD chapter named in the explanation and find the figure.

Do these DMV practice test signs questions follow the newest manual?

Yes. Every question was written from the MUTCD 11th Edition, dated December 2023, and checked on September 18, 2026. Section 1B.02 gives states two years after a final rule to bring their own manuals into line, so a state manual can trail the national one. Where the two differ, follow your state's manual.
