How it works
North Carolina asks a permit applicant to pass written, sign and vision tests. This unofficial North Carolina permit practice test covers the first two. Its 300 questions were written from Chapter 20 of the General Statutes, read on the General Assembly's site on 18 September 2026. Another 48 cover road signs. The Division of Motor Vehicles did not write it.

One NCDMV test, given at the office
The Division of Motor Vehicles, NCDMV, part of the state Department of Transportation, gives one written knowledge test, whether you arrive at 15 for a Level 1 permit or as an adult. People call it the NC DMV permit test. Chapter 20 has rules a national quiz skips. A driver may pass a bicycle or moped in a marked no-passing zone by giving four feet (G.S. 20-150(e)). Every car in a funeral procession runs headlights and hazard lamps. The cars behind the lead vehicle may follow it through an intersection (G.S. 20-157.1).
Figures Chapter 20 sets
G.S. 20-141 sets 35 mph inside municipal limits and 55 outside where nothing is posted. Signal for the last 100 feet, or 200 where the limit is 45 or higher. A child rides in a restraint until age 8 or 80 pounds.
Level 1 rules in G.S. 20-11: a supervising driver beside you, and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. only for the first six months.
G.S. 20-16(c) points: 5 for passing a stopped school bus, 4 for following too closely, 3 for running a stop sign.
New in 2025: G.S. 20-127(g) has the driver of a tinted car roll down the window as an officer approaches.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the permit test in NC?
NCDMV publishes no number. Its tests page and the May 2025 Driver Handbook, read 18 September 2026, give no question count or pass mark.
