How this list was compiled: Own questions, written from Title 55 of the Tennessee Code (chapters 8, 9, 10, 12 and 50). Statute text was read on 2026-10-05 in a public copy: Release 76 of the Tennessee Code, dated 2021-05-21, posted by Public.Resource.Org on the Internet Archive (file: https://archive.org/download/gov.tn.tca/release76.2021.05.21/gov.tn.tca.title.55.html; collection page: https://archive.org/details/gov.tn.tca), and most section links open that 2021 copy. On 2026-10-05 the Tennessee General Assembly's bill subject index, https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/Indexes/, was read subject by subject for the 112th, 113th and 114th General Assemblies (2021 to 2026). Every enacted Public Chapter that the index marks as amending Title 55, or lists with no title, was read on the Secretary of State's site, https://publications.tnsosfiles.com/acts/, and searched for the 70 cited sections. Sections changed in a part a question asks are cited as amended, with the act linked where the question rests on it: 2023 Pub. Ch. 164 (55-9-202), 2023 Pub. Ch. 354 (55-8-132), 2023 Pub. Ch. 388 (55-8-110), 2023 Pub. Ch. 428 (55-8-199) and 2025 Pub. Ch. 469 (55-50-322). Acts that changed a cited section only in a part no question asks: 2021 Pub. Ch. 137, 2023 Pub. Ch. 1072 (55-10-101). Nothing here was taken from the Tennessee driver license manual, so this bank does not cover everything in it: safe driving methods and the manual's own sample questions are not here. Road signs are asked from a separate national bank on the same page. Exam facts: the Department of Safety and Homeland Security's teen driver page, https://www.tn.gov/safety/driver-services/classd/teengdl.html, and its online knowledge test page, https://www.tn.gov/safety/driver-services/classd/teengdl/knowledge-test-online.html, read 2026-10-05, give a learner permit from age 15 after the written exams and a vision screening, and, for the online knowledge test offered to ages 15 to 17, 30 questions, 60 minutes and a minimum score of 80%. How it works
Tennessee issues a learner permit from age 15 after a knowledge test and vision screening. This unofficial Tennessee permit practice test asks 151 questions from Title 55 of the state code, each naming its section, plus 48 on road signs.

Learner permit at 15, intermediate license at 16
A permit holder drives only beside a licensed driver of 21 or older, and never between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The intermediate license takes 180 days with the permit and 50 certified practice hours, 10 of them at night (T.C.A. 55-50-311). Traffic law is the same at every age, so this also works as a Tennessee driving practice test for adults.
How this TN permit practice test follows the exam
The Department of Safety's online knowledge test for ages 15 to 17 has 30 questions, a 60-minute limit and an 80% pass mark. Exam mode here asks 30 and passes at 80%. Section 55-50-322 puts highway signs, traffic laws and, since 2026, bicyclists' hand signals on the examination.
Right on red is legal after a full stop unless a sign bars it (55-8-110).
Stop for a loading school bus from either direction, unless it is on a separate roadway (55-8-151).
Since 2023 the move-over rule covers any stopped vehicle with hazard lights flashing (55-8-132).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Tennessee knowledge test?
The Department of Safety's page for the online knowledge test gives 30 questions, 60 minutes and a minimum score of 80%, in English or Spanish. That page covers applicants aged 15 to 17 who test at home with a parent as proctor.
Is this a Tennessee DMV practice test from the state?
No. Tennessee has no DMV. The Department of Safety and Homeland Security gives the real exam, and this private site has never seen its questions. Every question here was written from Title 55 of the Tennessee Code.
Where are the Tennessee permit test answers?
The real exam's questions and key are not published, and none are here. Each practice question shows its keyed choice, a short explanation and the code section when you answer.
Can you take the knowledge test online in Tennessee?
Applicants aged 15 to 17 can, through the Department's e-Services, with a parent or guardian supervising in the Tennessee Proctor ID app. A computer or tablet is needed, not a phone. A failed try means a 24-hour wait; two online tries are the limit.
How old do you have to be to get a permit in Tennessee?
Fifteen, under T.C.A. 55-50-311, with a parent's or guardian's written approval. The Department also asks minors for proof of school attendance and for a parent or guardian to come along.
