How it works

Since 1 January 2026, California drivers must change lanes or slow for any stopped vehicle showing hazard lights. This unofficial California permit practice test asks that and 223 more questions written from the Vehicle Code, read on 18 September 2026, plus 48 on federal road signs.

Here the DMV really does give the test

The Department of Motor Vehicles runs the knowledge test. The exam is multiple choice, based on the California Driver's Handbook, and passed at 80 percent. The Vehicle Code adds rules other states lack. Section 21658.1 defines lane splitting by a two-wheeled motorcycle. A right turn across a bicycle lane starts by driving into that lane (21717).

Numbers the Vehicle Code sets

Section 22349 caps speed at 65 mph, or 55 on a two-lane undivided highway. Section 22352 sets 25 in business and residence districts and 15 in an alley. Under 18, a phone is barred even hands-free. Section 12814.6 asks a teen for six months on the permit and 50 supervised hours, 10 of them in darkness. A provisional license rules out driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and passengers under 20 for 12 months. Policies issued since 2025 carry $30,000, $60,000 and $15,000 minimums.

  • Press Exam mode under the question, then Start the exam. Marks come at the end. Press Missed to retry wrong answers until you get them right. Clear my progress, pressed twice, wipes all scores and saved questions on this device.
  • Sections 21809, 22352, 26708 and 27315 changed on 1 January 2026. Older study material may carry the earlier wording.
  • Alcohol questions turn on four figures: 0.08 percent for adults, 0.04 with a paying passenger, 0.05 and 0.01 under 21.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the California permit test?

The DMV pages a learner would check do not say. The instruction permit page and the handbook's testing chapter, read 18 September 2026, give an 80 percent pass mark, three attempts and a seven-day wait for minors after a failed try. Exam mode asks 25, this site's length, and 20 right passes.

Is the California permit test hard?

It rewards exact figures more than instinct. Distances repeat through the code: signal for the last 100 feet, dim within 500 feet of an oncoming car, park no closer than 15 feet to a hydrant. No practice page can promise a pass, but the exam mode result marks your weakest topic.

Are these the questions the DMV uses?

No. Nobody outside the DMV holds its question bank, and this site does not claim to. Each item was written from the California Vehicle Code, with the section number and a link to the legislature's text under the explanation. The DMV posts its own sample tests.
